Causes

  • Rough-road sensor or module physically missing (vehicle not equipped or hardware removed)
  • Disconnected or corroded connector or wiring to the sensor/module
  • Blown fuse or loss of power/ground to the sensor/module
  • Faulty sensor or module (internal failure)
  • CAN/bus communication error between module and vehicle network
  • PCM/BCM software mismatch or incorrect vehicle configuration coding

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator or message: 'Rough Road Hardware Not Present' or similar
  • Adaptive suspension or rough-road assist features disabled or inoperative
  • Possible loss of some ride-quality or terrain-specific functions
  • No change in engine running characteristics (this code is feature/hardware related)
  • Other network modules may show related communication faults

What to check

  • Verify vehicle equipment level and service information to confirm whether rough-road hardware should be present for this VIN
  • Use a scan tool to read all stored codes and live data; note any CAN communication errors
  • Visually inspect sensor/module connectors, wiring harness, and mounting for damage or disconnection
  • Check fuses and power/ground at the sensor/module
  • Confirm module presence on the CAN bus (use scope/CAN reader or scan tool network view)
  • Check for recent software updates, coding changes or aftermarket work that could affect configuration

Signal parameters

  • Sensor presence/power status (12V / ground)
  • Accelerometer X/Y/Z output (if available as live data)
  • Module status/presence flag reported on CAN
  • Diagnostic Trouble Codes present in related modules (ABS, BCM, ECM)
  • CAN bus error counters or bus-off status for the module

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the vehicle is supposed to have rough-road hardware: check VIN option list and factory build sheet or service manual.
  2. Retrieve and record all DTCs from all modules. Note any communication/U-codes that may indicate network issues.
  3. Visually inspect the rough-road sensor/module, harness, connectors, mounting and related fuses. Repair any obvious damage or corrosion.
  4. With scan tool, verify module appears on the CAN network and check live data for sensor presence and outputs. If module does not appear, check power/ground at the module connector.
  5. Measure power and ground at the sensor/module with DVOM. Replace blown fuses or repair power/ground wiring as required.
  6. If wiring and power are OK but module is not responding, try reconnecting the connector, clearing codes and performing a key cycle. Re-check for module presence.
  7. If module is present but reporting faults or invalid data, attempt reprogramming or correct coding per manufacturer procedures. Apply any available software updates or calibration.
  8. If reprogramming and wiring checks fail, replace the sensor/module with a correct OEM part and program/configure it as required.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test or simulation to confirm the code does not return and associated features operate correctly.
  10. If code persists and network errors are present, troubleshoot CAN bus (terminations, shorts, other module faults) before replacing additional components.

Likely causes

  • Loose or unplugged connector at the rough-road sensor/module
  • Blown fuse supplying the sensor/module
  • Module not coded/configured for this VIN (missing option in vehicle configuration)
  • Failed accelerometer or internal module electronics
  • Damaged CAN wiring or short to voltage/ground on module circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Rough Road Hardware Not Present: The control system cannot detect the expected rough-road sensor/module on the vehicle. Associated rough-road-dependent features may be disabled until the hardware is present and communicating correctly.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
