Cylinder 8 Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty cylinder 8 pressure (in‑cylinder) sensor
  • Intermittent open, short or high resistance in the sensor wiring or connector
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector pins
  • Poor sensor reference (5 V) or ground connection
  • ECM/PCM internal fault or intermittent ECU connector issue
  • Oil, fuel or debris contamination of the sensor

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) on, code P03DF stored
  • Intermittent rough idle or hesitation
  • Occasional misfire or misfire indication for cylinder 8
  • Reduced engine performance or drivability complaints under some conditions
  • Eventual poor fuel economy if problem persists

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and related codes; check pending vs. confirmed status
  • Monitor live data / waveform for cylinder 8 pressure sensor while cranking and at idle and load
  • Wiggle test wiring and connector while monitoring live signal for dropouts
  • Visually inspect harness and connector for corrosion, bent pins, oil or damage
  • Measure sensor supply voltage (reference), signal voltage, and ground at the connector with key on/engine off and during cranking
  • Check continuity and resistance of sensor wiring back to the ECM/PCM connector

Signal parameters

  • Reference supply typically 5 V (verify with vehicle-specific data)
  • Signal output expected to be a stable analog voltage proportional to pressure (example range ~0.5–4.5 V depending on design)
  • Signal should be stable with minimal noise; transient changes should correlate to compression events and engine speed
  • No open circuit or intermittent short to battery or ground during normal operation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze frame. Note whether the code is intermittent or confirmed and any related codes (misfire, injector, ECU).
  2. Reproduce the fault while monitoring live data for cylinder 8 pressure sensor. Look for momentary dropouts, spikes, or loss of signal when the fault occurs.
  3. Perform a wiggle test: with the sensor connected and monitoring the signal, gently wiggle the wiring harness and connector from sensor to ECU to try to reproduce the intermittent behavior.
  4. Visually inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, pin damage, oil/fuel contamination, or heat damage. Repair or replace damaged connector or harness sections.
  5. With key on (engine off) measure reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector. Then measure signal voltage while cranking/running. Compare to manufacturer specifications.
  6. Check wiring continuity and resistance from the sensor connector to the ECM pin. Check for shorts to battery and shorts to ground. Repair any wiring faults found.
  7. If wiring and connector check good and supply/ground are stable, swap or bench‑test the sensor if a known‑good sensor or test harness is available. Replace sensor if bench/vehicle tests show intermittent output.
  8. If new sensor still shows intermittent signal but wiring checks good, inspect ECM connector and pins for damage and consider ECM fault as last resort; consult manufacturer service information before ECM replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and road test under conditions that previously reproduced the fault. Re-scan and verify the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded connector at cylinder 8 pressure sensor
  • Wiring abrasion or chafing causing intermittent contact (heat/vibration area)
  • Failed pressure sensor (internal electronics intermittent)
  • Poor ground or weak reference voltage to the sensor
  • Contamination (oil/fuel) affecting sensor operation

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Intermittent/erratic signal detected from cylinder 8 pressure sensor circuit. The ECM flagged the sensor output as unstable or outside expected range for a detectable time window.
