Causes

  • Faulty or weak ignition (coil, spark plug, plug wire or connector) on cylinder 8
  • Fuel injector clogged, leaking or electrically faulty on cylinder 8
  • Low compression on cylinder 8 (worn rings, damaged piston, burned or bent valve, valve seating issue)
  • Intake or vacuum leak affecting cylinder 8 or uneven air distribution
  • Incorrect camshaft/crankshaft timing or timing chain/belt jump affecting cylinder 8
  • Fuel delivery problem (low rail pressure or pressure pulsation)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine / MIL illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration
  • Intermittent or consistent misfire on cylinder 8
  • Reduced engine power and acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption and visible exhaust smoke in severe cases
  • Hard starting or stumble under load

What to check

  • Read all stored/active DTCs and freeze frame data with a scan tool
  • Check misfire counters and cylinder balance (live data)
  • Visual inspection of spark plug, ignition coil, plug wire and connector for cylinder 8
  • Inspect fuel injector electrical connector and perform injector balance/activation test if available
  • Perform a cranking and running compression test and/or leak‑down test on cylinder 8
  • Check fuel rail pressure and consistency under load

Signal parameters

  • Cylinder 8 misfire count (events/min or count)
  • Individual cylinder fuel trim or balance if supported
  • Ignition coil primary/secondary dwell and spark event data for cylinder 8
  • Injector pulse width / commanded vs actual injector current
  • In‑cylinder pressure waveform (if equipped) or derived cylinder pressure metric
  • Crank and cam position sensor waveforms and cam/crank correlation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze frame data; note conditions when the fault set (load, RPM, temperature).
  2. Use live data to confirm cylinder 8 misfire or pressure variation and to view misfire counters and trims.
  3. Visually inspect and, if needed, replace or test the spark plug, coil and high‑tension lead for cylinder 8. Recheck.
  4. Activate or swap the cylinder 8 injector with another cylinder’s injector and observe whether the fault follows the injector.
  5. Perform a compression and/or leak‑down test on cylinder 8 and compare to adjacent cylinders; out‑of‑spec compression suggests mechanical repair.
  6. Check fuel rail pressure stability and test injector flow where possible; inspect for return leaks or pressure regulator faults.
  7. Inspect intake manifold gasket and vacuum lines near cylinder 8 for leaks; use appropriate safe methods to detect leaks.
  8. Verify cam/crank timing and sensor signals with an oscilloscope or scan tool; check for timing chain/belt jump or phaser issues.
  9. If the engine uses an in‑cylinder pressure sensor, inspect sensor wiring, connectors and sensor operation; consider bench or dealer‑level testing.
  10. After repairs or component swaps, clear codes and perform a road test or run under the same conditions to confirm the issue is resolved.
  11. If the cause remains unclear or mechanical fault is suspected, escalate to advanced diagnostics (oscilloscope, in‑cylinder pressure test, engine teardown) or dealer/level‑specific support.

Likely causes

  • Ignition component failure (coil, plug, connector) on cylinder 8
  • Fuel injector fault (nozzle clogged or not firing) for cylinder 8
  • Low mechanical compression or valve sealing problem at cylinder 8
  • Vacuum/intake leak or timing issue causing poor cylinder filling

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Cylinder 8 pressure variation high — ECM detected abnormal combustion/pressure behavior in cylinder 8. May result from ignition, fuel, mechanical or sensor faults. Further diagnosis required.
