Causes

  • Perform a vacuum test (vacuum systems) or apply bench vacuum to valve
  • Inspect intake manifold ports and EGR passages for carbon/isolation

Signal parameters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code and review freeze frame; confirm P0401 is current and relevant to complaint.
  2. Use a scan tool to monitor EGR commanded vs actual values while at idle and during part-throttle; command EGR open and watch for movement or PID change.
  3. Inspect EGR valve for carbon build-up; remove valve and visually inspect/clean passages if carboned. Re-test after cleaning.
  4. If vacuum-operated, apply hand-held vacuum to the EGR valve while observing engine response (should roughen when valve opens).
  5. Test DPFE or EGR pressure sensor: compare sensor voltages with engine off and running and check for correct differential readings.
  6. Inspect/replace EGR solenoid and check vacuum hoses or replace if cracked/colapsed. Verify electrical continuity and connectors.
  7. If position-sensor equipped, test EGR position sensor output while commanding valve; replace if no position change or out-of-spec voltage.
  8. Check intake manifold passages and EGR cooler for blockage; clear or replace as required. Repair any coolant leaks in EGR cooler.
  9. Check for exhaust backpressure issues (restricted catalytic converter or particulate filter) that can affect EGR flow.
  10. After repairs, erase codes, perform functional tests and road test to confirm proper EGR operation; verify no reoccurrence.
