Causes

  • Open, shorted, or damaged wiring in the EGR sensor A circuit
  • Corroded, loose, or contaminated connector at the EGR sensor
  • Failed EGR position/feedback sensor
  • Stuck or mechanically seized EGR valve causing abnormal sensor feedback
  • Faulty PCM or poor ECU ground/reference
  • Carbon buildup blocking EGR valve movement or sensor operation

Symptoms

  • Check Engine MIL illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance, rough idle or hesitation
  • Excessive smoke, higher NOx emissions, or failed emissions test
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Possible stalling or drivability complaints under load
  • EGR-related limp mode on some vehicles

What to check

  • Read and record all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data
  • Visual inspection of EGR sensor/valve connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or moisture
  • Check for additional EGR-related codes (flow or control faults)
  • Monitor live data: EGR position/feedback voltage and commanded position
  • Verify vehicle battery voltage and fuses for EGR circuits
  • Listen/inspect for EGR valve movement when commanded (if safe to do so)

Signal parameters

  • Sensor uses a reference and ground from PCM and returns a position voltage proportional to valve position
  • Typical feedback voltage range (general guideline): approximately 0.5 V (closed) to ~4.5 V (open); must change smoothly with valve movement
  • Reference supply typically 5 V from PCM; ground must be stable (near 0 V)
  • No sudden voltage drops, spikes, or intermittent open circuits during key on/engine run and when commanding EGR

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve trouble codes and freeze-frame; note conditions when code set (engine temp, load, RPM).
  2. Visually inspect EGR sensor and valve connectors and harness for rubbing, broken insulation, corrosion or water ingress; repair wiring as needed.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe sensor connector: verify presence of reference (≈5 V) and good ground; check continuity to PCM for reference and ground.
  4. Start engine and monitor live EGR feedback voltage while commanding EGR (use scan tool to request EGR movement). Voltage should vary smoothly and correspond to commanded position; if it is fixed, erratic, or out of range, suspect sensor or wiring.
  5. Wiggle test harness/connectors while monitoring live data to reproduce fault (check for intermittent).
  6. If wiring and connectors OK, remove and inspect EGR valve for carbon buildup or mechanical seizure; clean valve if serviceable and retest.
  7. If mechanical and harness checks pass, replace EGR feedback/position sensor or complete EGR valve assembly per service manual and recheck operation.
  8. If replacement does not clear the issue, verify PCM outputs and consider PCM/ECU diagnosis per manufacturer procedures.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test and system checks to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Broken or chafed harness between EGR sensor and PCM
  • Water ingress or corrosion in sensor connector
  • Internal failure of the EGR position/feedback sensor
  • EGR valve mechanically seized by carbon deposits
  • Loss of 5 V reference or ground at the sensor
  • Intermittent contact due to pin push-out or bent terminal

Fault status

⚠️ Status
PCM detected an electrical fault in the EGR Sensor A circuit (open/short/high/low/intermittent). The EGR feedback signal is missing or out of expected range, impairing proper EGR control.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0 - 2.5 hours
