Causes
- Open, shorted or damaged sensor wiring or poor connector connection
- Failed EGR temperature sensor (thermistor/thermocouple)
- Contaminated or clogged EGR cooler or EGR passage altering temperatures
- Exhaust leakage or coolant contamination affecting sensor readings
- Incorrect replacement sensor or wrong part installed
- Intermittent connection due to corrosion or vibration
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- Possible reduced engine performance or limp mode depending on vehicle
- Rough idle, hesitation or poor drivability when EGR is active
- Failed emissions test or elevated NOx emissions
- Stored freeze frame and freeze data showing abnormal EGR temp values
What to check
- Read and record freeze frame and live data for EGR temperature with a scan tool
- Visually inspect sensor, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, or heat exposure
- Back-probe connector and verify reference voltage and ground at key operating conditions
- Measure sensor resistance at ambient and while heating sensor (heat gun) to verify response
- Wiggle test wiring while observing live data for intermittent behavior
- Check continuity from sensor connector to ECM pin to rule out open/short
Signal parameters
- Reference voltage: typically ~5 V (varies by vehicle) — verify with manufacturer data
- Sensor signal voltage range: commonly ~0.1–4.9 V depending on exhaust/EGR temperature
- Typical thermistor resistance at ~25°C: often ~1–10 kΩ (varies by sensor type and vehicle)
- Expected behavior: resistance decreases (NTC) or voltage changes smoothly as sensor is heated; sudden open or short indicated by near-infinite resistance or near 0 V/constant 5 V
- Compare live sensor temperature or voltage to ambient and expected engine operating temperatures using a scan tool
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve freeze frame and live data; note conditions when fault set (engine temp, load, EGR commanded/actual).
- Visually inspect connector and harness at EGR temperature sensor for corrosion, melted insulation, or damage.
- With ignition on (engine off), verify reference voltage and sensor ground at the connector. Reference should be present and stable (check OEM spec).
- Disconnect sensor and measure sensor resistance at ambient. If specified by OEM, compare to spec. If resistance is open or shorted, replace sensor.
- Reconnect sensor and start engine. Using a scan tool, monitor sensor voltage/temperature while warming engine. Use a heat gun to warm the sensor tip and confirm the sensor signal changes smoothly.
- Perform continuity checks from sensor connector pins to the ECM connector to rule out opens or shorts to power/ground.
- If wiring and sensor check good but readings inconsistent with expected EGR temperatures, inspect EGR cooler, passages, and valve for restriction or bypass (which can alter temperature readings).
- Repair or replace any damaged wiring, connectors or sensor. Clear codes and test drive under same conditions to confirm code does not return.
- If all wiring and sensor are good and code persists, consider ECM fault diagnosis or consult manufacturer technical service information.
Likely causes
- Corroded/loose connector at the EGR temperature sensor
- Broken/shorted wire in sensor harness (pinched or rubbed through)
- Faulty EGR temperature sensor (open/shorted internal element)
- Clogged EGR cooler or valve causing abnormal exhaust gas temperatures
- Short to battery or ground in reference/wiring to ECM
Fault status
