Exhaust Pressure Sensor Low

Causes

  • Failed/exhaust pressure sensor (internal fault)
  • Open circuit or short to ground in sensor signal wire
  • Poor or corroded connector/terminal
  • Blocked, crushed or disconnected sensor port or hose
  • Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor (affecting pressure reading)
  • PCM/ECU fault or incorrect calibration

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Failed or inhibited diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration
  • Reduced engine power or limp mode on some models
  • Warning messages about DPF/EGR/Exhaust pressure on dashboard
  • Poor fuel economy or unusual exhaust behavior

What to check

  • Read stored/active codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool; note conditions when code set
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector and harness for damage, corrosion, oil or soot contamination
  • Back-probe sensor connector and check for reference supply (usually 5V), ground continuity and signal voltage with ignition on
  • Check for open or short to ground between sensor signal and PCM
  • Use a hand vacuum/pressure pump (or calibrated pressure source) on the sensor port while monitoring live data to confirm sensor response
  • Inspect and clear any blockages in the sensor port or reference hose; check exhaust for leaks upstream

Signal parameters

  • Supply/reference: typically ~5 V reference from PCM (verify model-specific spec)
  • Signal output: analog voltage 0–5 V (common range); low-pressure readings typically low voltage (example idle/no pressure ~0.3–1.5 V; high differential pressure higher voltage)
  • Ground: solid chassis/ECM ground; low resistance to battery negative expected
  • Response: output should change smoothly with applied differential pressure — no abrupt drops to 0 V

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, confirm P0472 and note freeze frame (engine speed, temperature, load).
  2. Perform visual inspection of sensor, harness and connector. Repair obvious damage and secure connector.
  3. With ignition ON, back-probe connector: verify 5 V reference (if specified), good ground and check signal voltage. If supply or ground missing, trace to PCM.
  4. If supply and ground are present but signal is low or zero, apply a known pressure to the sensor and observe live data for correct voltage change. If no change, suspect sensor.
  5. Perform continuity and short-to-ground checks on the signal wire between sensor and PCM; repair any open/short.
  6. Inspect/clean sensor port/hose and ensure no blockages or kinks in reference lines. Re-test.
  7. If wiring and ports OK and sensor does not respond correctly, replace the exhaust pressure sensor with OEM-specified part.
  8. After repair, clear codes and perform a road/in-use verification including attempted DPF regen where applicable; confirm no return of code.
  9. If code returns with good sensor and wiring, consider PCM diagnosis or replacement per manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Damaged sensor wiring or connector causing low or no signal
  • Sensor contaminated or mechanically damaged (blocked port or clogged mesh)
  • Sensor has lost internal reference and outputs below range
  • Connector not fully seated or corroded contacts
  • Exhaust system damage creating abnormal pressure characteristics

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Exhaust pressure sensor circuit reporting a low (below-range) signal; check sensor, wiring, connector and sensor port for faults.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
