Incorrect Immobilizer Key

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or non-programmed transponder key (worn/damaged chip)
  • Dead/weak key fob battery (if combined transponder/fob)
  • Immobilizer antenna/reader coil fault or loss of power to the reader
  • Poor wiring or corroded connector between antenna, immobilizer ECU and BCM
  • Immobilizer module or BCM fault (software or hardware)
  • Key not learned to vehicle (new key or lost programming)

Symptoms

  • Engine cranks but does not start, or cranks intermittently
  • Starter inhibited — no crank in some vehicles
  • Security/immobilizer warning lamp or key indicator on dash (steady or flashing)
  • Key not recognized messages on dash or infotainment screen
  • Remote locking/unlocking may be unaffected (if separate system)
  • Vehicle starts with one key but not another (spare works)

What to check

  • Verify DTC P0513 and note freeze frame data with a scan tool
  • Try a known-good/spare programmed key and observe behavior
  • Check key fob battery voltage and replace if low
  • Inspect immobilizer antenna/ring around ignition cylinder for physical damage and secure mounting
  • Inspect fuses and power/ground at immobilizer/antenna circuits
  • Scan immobilizer/BCM/ECM for additional related DTCs and communication errors (U-codes)

Signal parameters

  • Transponder frequency: typically ~125 kHz (low frequency LF) for read coil
  • Transponder ID: unique serial code read by immobilizer (hex/string) — compare stored ID vs read ID
  • Antenna coil resistance: manufacturer-specific (check service data) — look for open/short
  • Power to immobilizer antenna: typically switched 12 V or ignition-switched supply — check presence with key cycle
  • Data bus: immobilizer ↔ BCM/ECU communications usually over CAN/LIN — check for valid CAN/LIN traffic and module responses
  • Security lamp/LED status: steady/flash patterns according to manufacturer (indicates learn/lock states)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record code and freeze frame with a scan tool; check for related DTCs in BCM/ECM/immobilizer module
  2. Attempt to start using the original key and then a verified spare programmed key. Note differences (if spare works, fault is likely key-related)
  3. Check/replace key fob battery if transponder and fob share housing; retest recognition
  4. Visually inspect ignition cylinder/antenna ring and wiring for damage; measure supply voltage and ground to the antenna/reader with ignition on
  5. Measure antenna coil resistance and continuity to module (compare to service spec) and check for short to ground
  6. Use a dealer-level or manufacturer-capable diagnostic tool to read the transponder ID from the presented key and compare with immobilizer stored IDs
  7. If key is not learned, attempt immobilizer key re-learn procedure per service manual (some vehicles require dealer tools/security PIN)
  8. Check for and resolve any CAN/LIN communication faults (U-codes) that could prevent immobilizer and ECU coordination
  9. If antenna/module wiring and keys check good but immobilizer still fails to recognize keys, consider immobilizer module or BCM fault — verify module power, grounds and attempt software re-flash or reprogram per manufacturer guidance
  10. After repairs or reprogramming, clear codes and perform multiple start cycles to confirm fault does not return; document any keys added or replaced
  11. If security/system programming is required beyond shop capability, advise dealer or locksmith with OEM programming access

Likely causes

  • Worn or damaged transponder key
  • Dead or weak key fob battery
  • Key not programmed or lost from immobilizer memory
  • Antenna/reader coil fault or connector/wiring issue
