Causes

  • Open or broken wiring in BPP Sensor A circuit
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the pedal sensor
  • Failed brake pedal position sensor or switch
  • Poor or lost ground for the sensor circuit
  • Aftermarket or collision damage to harness near pedal area
  • Intermittent connector contact or water intrusion

Symptoms

  • Cruise control disabled or unavailable
  • Brake lights may not operate or operate intermittently
  • Brake/ABS warning light or traction control light illuminated
  • Reduced engine torque or limp-home mode on some vehicles
  • No change in BPP live data when pedal is pressed

What to check

  • Read and record DTCs and freeze frame data with a scan tool
  • Inspect pedal area for physical damage, torn boots, pinched harness or crushed wiring
  • Visually inspect sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Check brake lights operation while pressing pedal
  • Backprobe the sensor connector with ignition ON and with pedal at rest and depressed
  • Perform a wiggle test on harness while monitoring live data/voltage

Signal parameters

  • Typical reference voltage: 5.0 V (check vehicle spec)
  • Expected signal (analog potentiometer type): ~0.5–1.0 V at rest, increasing to ~4.0–4.5 V at full depression (vehicle-specific)
  • Expected signal (switch type): closed = continuity to ground or near 0 V; open = no continuity/infinite Ω
  • Open-circuit condition: no signal change, open/very high resistance on continuity check

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: Park on level surface, chock wheels, key OFF. Disable battery power if required by vehicle procedures before disconnecting connectors.
  2. Verify code and context: clear codes, perform functional test with scan tool and re-check if P057A returns. Record live BPP values at rest and when depressed.
  3. Visual inspection: inspect pedal area, sensor connector, wiring for damage, corrosion, rod/boot interference or pinch points.
  4. Check brake lights: Have an assistant press pedal while you observe brake lights. If brake lights do not illuminate, suspect switch/circuit open.
  5. Backprobe and measure: With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe sensor connector. Verify reference voltage (usually 5 V) and ground. Measure signal at rest and when pedal depressed. No change or no reference indicates an open.
  6. Continuity and resistance: With key OFF and battery disconnected if required, check continuity between sensor signal pin and PCM/ECM input pin. Check sensor switch/potentiometer resistance per vehicle spec. Open or infinite resistance indicates failed sensor or broken wire.
  7. Wiggle test: With backprobed leads connected and someone operating the pedal, wiggle harness and connectors to look for intermittent faults while watching live data.
  8. Repair: Repair any damaged wiring, clean/replace corroded connectors, or replace the pedal position sensor/switch if tests indicate failure.
  9. Verify: Reconnect, clear codes, and perform functional test and a road test to confirm the code does not return and functions are restored.

Likely causes

  • Broken wire at pedal hinge/boot (most common)
  • Corroded connector pins at the pedal sensor
  • Failed pedal position sensor/switch element
  • Poor ground at sensor or chassis ground point
