Causes

  • Open or short in IMTV control wiring or connector (Bank 1)
  • Corroded, bent or disconnected connector pins
  • Failed IMTV actuator or solenoid (stuck or electrically open)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay feeding the IMTV circuit
  • Restricted or seized intake tuning valve (mechanical binding)
  • PCM output or internal driver failure

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced torque or throttle response at specific RPM ranges
  • Rough idle or uneven running if valve stuck in extreme position
  • Poor fuel economy or drivability complaints
  • Possible engine hesitation during load transitions

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool. Confirm code and related DTCs.
  • Visual inspection of IMTV connector, wiring harness, and nearby components for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or rubbing.
  • Verify fuses/relays supplying the IMTV circuit.
  • Backprobe IMTV connector and monitor voltage/ground while commanding valve ON/OFF from the scan tool.
  • Measure IMTV coil resistance with connector disconnected and compare to specification (vehicle-specific).
  • Check continuity from connector to PCM pin and for short to battery or ground.

Signal parameters

  • Typical solenoid coil resistance: often 10–60 Ω (vehicle-specific) — consult service data
  • Connector idle (key ON, engine OFF): supply side = battery voltage (~12 V), control side may be switched or grounded by PCM
  • When PCM commands the valve: control circuit may be driven as switched ground or pulsed (PWM). Expect switching between ~0 V and near battery voltage or a PWM waveform (depending on design)
  • Cranked/operating current draw: generally
  • No continuity (open) between IMTV coil terminals or open to PCM indicates an electrical open

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and related DTCs; note conditions when code set.
  2. Visually inspect IMTV connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or contamination. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. Verify relevant fuse(s) and relay(s). Replace if blown or faulty and recheck.
  4. With ignition ON, backprobe the IMTV connector. Command the valve ON/OFF using a scan tool and observe the control signal/voltage. Note any change or lack of response.
  5. Disconnect connector and measure solenoid coil resistance. Compare to factory spec. An open or out-of-spec reading indicates a failed solenoid.
  6. Check continuity from the IMTV connector to the PCM pin. Also check for shorts to battery and short to ground.
  7. If wiring and PCM continuity are good, bench-actuate the valve using a fused 12 V supply (observe polarity and current limits) to confirm mechanical movement. If it moves and electrical readings were good, suspect intermittent wiring or PCM drive.
  8. If the valve is mechanically stuck, remove and inspect the intake runner mechanism for carbon, debris or damage. Repair or replace the IMTV/runner assembly as required.
  9. If wiring is good but the PCM does not provide the expected drive signal when commanded, consider PCM driver fault—verify with service manual tests before replacing PCM.
  10. Clear codes and perform a road or functional test to confirm repair. Re-scan to ensure no recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/corroded connector or wiring harness to IMTV
  • Failed IMTV solenoid/actuator (electrical open or internal failure)
  • Mechanically stuck intake tuning valve preventing expected electrical response
  • Blown fuse or power/ground fault upstream of the valve
