Causes

  • Short to battery positive (B+) in the Sensor Power Supply B wiring
  • Faulty sensor connected to the Supply B circuit with internal short
  • Corroded or damaged connector or wiring contacting a high-voltage source
  • Failed ECM/PCM internal regulator or driver that provides the reference/supply
  • Aftermarket accessory wired into reference/supply circuit
  • Blown or incorrect fuse or fusible link related to ECM supply

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Related sensor readings out of range or intermittent
  • Loss of driveability or limp mode if the affected sensor is critical
  • Possible multiple electrical faults or other DTCs present

What to check

  • Scan for all stored/related DTCs and review freeze frame data
  • Visually inspect connectors, wiring, and harness routing for damage, pin corrosion, or insulation chafing
  • Check for aftermarket devices spliced into wiring near the sensor or ECM
  • Verify battery voltage and charging system health
  • Backprobe sensor supply pin with key ON (engine OFF) and measure voltage
  • Unplug the sensor and see if fault code returns (helps isolate sensor vs. wiring/ECM)

Signal parameters

  • Typical reference/supply voltage expected: ~4.75–5.25 V (varies by vehicle)
  • High condition threshold (varies by manufacturer): generally >5.5–6.0 V triggers high circuit DTC
  • No-load short to B+ will show battery voltage (~12 V) at the sensor supply pin
  • Intermittent faults may show fluctuating voltage or occasional spikes on an oscilloscope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Note trip conditions and any related codes.
  2. Visually inspect sensors, connectors, and wiring for damage, pin corrosion, loose terminals, or aftermarket splices.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the Sensor Power Supply B pin at the sensor connector. Compare measured voltage to expected reference (~5 V). If voltage is near battery voltage, suspect a short to B+ or faulty sensor.
  4. Disconnect the sensor connector and check the supply pin at the harness side. If the high voltage remains with sensor disconnected, the short is downstream (harness/ECM). If voltage drops to expected value with sensor disconnected, suspect the sensor.
  5. Trace harness toward the ECM, checking for shorts to B+ using a multimeter (continuity/resistance to battery positive with power removed) or use an unpowered short-finder technique. Repair any wiring chafes or splices found.
  6. If harness and sensor check good, test/replace the suspect sensor and retest. Some sensors can be tested by comparing output behavior to specification on a scope or meter.
  7. If issue persists after sensor and wiring repairs, suspect ECM internal regulator fault. Confirm with manufacturer's ECM bench test procedure or consult OEM technical service before ECM replacement.
  8. Clear codes, perform functional test/road test, and confirm the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Short to B+ in the harness at or near the sensor connector
  • Failed sensor with internal short to B+
  • ECM internal supply/regulator fault (less common)
