Cylinder 9 Glow Plug Incorrect

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Failed glow plug (open, shorted, or degraded heating element)
  • Open, shorted or damaged wiring harness or connector at cylinder 9
  • Corroded or loose connector or ground for the glow plug
  • Blown fuse, faulty relay or power supply to the glow-plug bank
  • Poor engine ground or high-resistance ground at the cylinder head
  • ECM/PCM software fault or internal output driver failure

Symptoms

  • Difficult or prolonged cold starts, especially in cold ambient temperatures
  • Glow-plug or preheat warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • Engine rough idle or misfire on initial warm-up
  • Increased white smoke during start (diesel) or poor warm-up performance
  • Possible MIL illumination depending on manufacturer monitoring

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for P06CD and any related codes; record freeze-frame data and ignition cycles
  • Visually inspect glow plug connector, wiring harness, and engine harness routing for damage, corrosion, or disconnection at cylinder 9
  • Check glow-plug fuse(s) and preheat relay operation
  • Measure resistance of cylinder 9 glow plug (engine cold) and compare to other cylinders
  • With key-on-engine-off, command preheat using a scan tool and measure voltage at the cylinder 9 glow plug connector
  • Check ground continuity from the cylinder head and glow-plug ground to chassis/battery negative

Signal parameters

  • Typical glow-plug resistance (cold): ~0.2–3.0 ohms (varies by design) — compare to other cylinders
  • Activation voltage at connector during preheat: approx. battery voltage ~11–14 V (may be pulsed)
  • Typical current per glow plug during operation: several amps (often 5–20 A depending on design)
  • Command duration: seconds to tens of seconds depending on ECU strategy (use scan tool to view actual command)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record freeze-frame data and related DTCs; clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Visually inspect harness, connector, and glow plug area for damage, corrosion, oil ingress, or loose pins at cylinder 9.
  3. Inspect/verify power feed: check relevant fuse(s) and preheat relay operation; verify voltage supply to glow-plug bank with key-on and during preheat command.
  4. Measure glow-plug resistance at cylinder 9 (engine cold) and compare to other cylinders. A significantly higher or open reading indicates a faulty plug; a short to ground indicates internal short.
  5. With a scan tool, command the glow-plug ON and measure voltage at the cylinder 9 terminal. No voltage indicates supply/relay/ECU driver issue; intermittent voltage suggests wiring or connector problem.
  6. Check ground continuity between cylinder head/plug ground and battery negative. Repair any high-resistance grounds.
  7. If measurements are inconclusive, swap cylinder 9 glow plug with a known-good plug from another cylinder and re-test: if code follows plug, replace the plug; if code stays on cylinder 9, suspect wiring/ECU.
  8. Repair or replace failed component(s): connector repair, wiring harness repair, fuse/relay replacement, or glow plug replacement. Use correct OEM-type glow plug and torque to spec.
  9. After repair, clear DTCs and perform multiple key-on/start cycles and a road or cold-start test to confirm the fault does not recur.
  10. If wiring and components check good and code persists, consider ECU/PCM output driver diagnosis or replacement per manufacturer procedure.

Likely causes

  • Failed glow plug on cylinder 9
  • Corroded/loose connector or broken wire in the cylinder 9 harness
  • Power/ground fault (fuse, relay, or engine ground) affecting cylinder 9
  • ECM driver fault (less common)
