Causes

  • Broken/open wiring in the sensor reference F circuit
  • Damaged or corroded sensor-to-harness connectors
  • Short to ground or short to battery on the reference wiring
  • Faulty sensor that loads the reference circuit
  • Poor PCM/ECU connector or internal PCM fault
  • Aftermarket accessories or repairs that disturbed wiring

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / check engine light ON
  • One or more sensor-related trouble codes or multiple sensors inoperative
  • Poor engine performance, hesitation, or reduced drivability depending on which sensors use the reference
  • Reduced fuel economy or improper idle
  • Intermittent faults or faults that clear when harness is moved

What to check

  • Scan for current and pending codes and read freeze frame / data for related sensors
  • Visually inspect wiring harnesses and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Check battery voltage to ensure a valid 12V supply before testing reference
  • Backprobe the PCM sensor reference F terminal with key ON (engine OFF) and measure voltage
  • Backprobe the sensor reference terminal at the sensor connector and compare to PCM reference
  • Perform continuity check between PCM reference pin and sensor reference pin (power off)

Signal parameters

  • PCM sensor reference voltage (expected): about 5.0 V (typical range 4.75–5.25 V) with key ON, engine OFF
  • Open-circuit at sensor: near 0 V at the sensor reference pin while PCM reference is 5 V
  • Short to ground: reference at sensor
  • Short to battery: reference >5.5 V or near battery voltage
  • Continuity: low resistance between PCM reference pin and sensor reference pin (typically

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze frame and live data, note which sensors use reference F and any related DTCs.
  2. Visually inspect connectors and wiring along the circuit for damage, corrosion, or recent repairs.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF) measure the reference voltage at the PCM reference F terminal. Confirm it is ~5 V.
  4. Measure the reference voltage at the sensor connector. If it is ~5 V at PCM but 0 V at sensor, suspect open circuit between PCM and sensor.
  5. If reference is low at PCM, verify battery voltage and grounds, then suspect internal PCM fault or blown internal regulator; consult manufacturer before replacing PCM.
  6. If open between PCM and sensor, disconnect battery and perform continuity/ohm tests between PCM reference pin and sensor reference pin. Repair/replace damaged wiring or connectors as needed.
  7. If reference is present but unstable/intermittent, perform wiggle tests on connectors/wiring with live monitoring to locate intermittent breaks.
  8. If a sensor is suspected shorting the reference, disconnect the sensor(s) and measure reference at PCM; if normal with sensor disconnected, replace the faulty sensor.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform road/drive cycle or reproduce conditions to confirm the fault does not return.
  10. If wiring and sensors test good and reference at PCM is out of spec, follow manufacturer procedure for PCM diagnosis and replacement if required.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion at the sensor or PCM
  • Pin pushed out or fractured wire at a connector
  • Open circuit between PCM reference pin and sensor reference pin
  • Failed sensor presenting low resistance to ground
  • Intermittent open due to broken wire under insulation or vibration
