Causes

  • Faulty turbine (transmission input) speed sensor
  • Incorrect sensor air gap or misadjusted sensor position
  • Damaged or corroded connector or wiring (open, short to ground or power, high resistance)
  • Bad reluctor ring (missing, damaged, or contaminated)
  • Contaminated sensor (fluid, debris) or magnetization loss
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM) / engine control module (ECM) or software issue

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Transmission shift irregularities, harsh or delayed shifts
  • Transmission may stay in limp mode or reduced functionality
  • Unexpected gear ratios or slipping sensation under load
  • Possible inability to accelerate smoothly

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list; note conditions when P0716 set
  • Compare live data: turbine (input) speed vs engine RPM and output/wheel speed
  • Inspect sensor connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Visually inspect reluctor ring for damage or missing teeth
  • Measure sensor resistance and output signal with oscilloscope or multimeter per factory specs
  • Check sensor air gap and mounting/adjustment against service manual

Signal parameters

  • Type: either variable-reluctance (VR) AC sine or Hall-effect/square-wave (depends on vehicle)
  • VR amplitude: typically 0.5–8 V AC at low-to-moderate speeds (varies by application)
  • Hall/square: 0–5 V square wave referenced to vehicle ground
  • Frequency: proportional to turbine speed (low hundreds of Hz at low RPM; increases with speed)
  • Expected behavior: clean waveform with consistent amplitude/frequency proportional to engine/transmission speed; no dropouts

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve code and freeze-frame data; note vehicle conditions (cold, hot, gear, speed).
  2. With scan tool, monitor turbine/input speed, output speed, and engine RPM while stationary and during a controlled road test. Look for mismatches or dropouts.
  3. Visually inspect sensor, connector, and wiring harness at the transmission for damage, corrosion, or loose pins. Repair as needed.
  4. If wiring looks good, backprobe connector and observe sensor signal with oscilloscope (preferred) or multimeter. Verify waveform type and amplitude per service data.
  5. If signal missing or erratic, check continuity to TCM and for short to ground/power. Repair wiring harness faults.
  6. Verify sensor air gap and mounting position against manufacturer specification; adjust or reposition per service manual if adjustable.
  7. Inspect reluctor ring/gear for damage, missing teeth, or metal debris; replace if defective.
  8. Replace the sensor if out of specification or physically damaged. Clear codes and perform relearn/adaptation procedures if required.
  9. Recheck for codes and road test to confirm repair. If problem persists, consider TCM/ECM diagnosis or internal transmission inspection.

Likely causes

  • Sensor not installed/adjusted to specified air gap
  • Sensor electrical connector corroded or loose
  • Sensor failed (common failure point)
  • Reluctor ring damaged or missing teeth
  • Intermittent wiring fault due to chafing or pinched harness

Fault status

⚠️ Status
