Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in the Mode Switch B circuit
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector(s) at the mode switch or TCM
  • Faulty Transmission Mode Switch (mechanical or internal electrical failure)
  • Poor or missing ground or power supply to the switch circuit
  • Water intrusion or contamination at connectors
  • Internal TCM input circuit fault or software issue

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • Incorrect gear selection or failure to engage selected drive mode
  • Transmission stuck in limp/default mode or limited gears
  • Erratic or harsh shifting, or no shift in certain modes
  • Stored transmission-related fault codes and possible drivability complaints

What to check

  • Connect a full-function OBD-II scan tool and read freeze frame and all stored codes (note any related transmission codes)
  • View live data and monitor Mode Switch B signal while operating the mode selector (watch for expected state changes and stable values)
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the mode switch and TCM for corrosion, damage, pin push-out, water, or loose terminals
  • Check fuses and power/ground circuits related to the transmission/selector switch circuit
  • Perform wiggle test on harness with the ignition on while monitoring the live signal for intermittent changes
  • Consult manufacturer service information and wiring diagrams for pinout and expected voltages

Signal parameters

  • Typical reference: 5 V reference or switched 12 V supply (verify with vehicle wiring diagram)
  • Expected signal: distinct voltage or digital state change when selecting different transmission modes (0 V, ~5 V or switched battery voltage depending on design)
  • Open circuit: high resistance/infinite between switch terminal and TCM input
  • Short to ground: near 0 V at signal terminal with switch active
  • Short to battery: near 12 V at signal terminal regardless of switch position (if supply-fed)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Obtain full diagnostic trouble code list and freeze frame data with a scan tool; note related codes and conditions when P071D set
  2. Inspect the mode switch assembly, connectors and harness for visible damage, corrosion, water ingress; repair as needed
  3. Backprobe the mode switch connector and the corresponding TCM connector; with ignition ON (engine OFF) operate the mode selector and observe the signal on a DVOM or oscilloscope; compare to expected values from factory wiring diagram
  4. If signal does not change or is out of range, measure for continuity between switch and TCM pins to identify open circuit; check for short to ground or battery with an ohmmeter
  5. Perform wiggle/stress test on harness while monitoring signal to locate intermittent faults
  6. If wiring and connector are good and signal behavior at the switch is correct but TCM input does not reflect it, suspect TCM input fault — verify power/ground to TCM and review technical service bulletins before replacing TCM
  7. After repair, clear codes and road-test to confirm the fault does not return; re-scan to verify no additional transmission codes remain

Likely causes

  • Broken or chafed harness between the switch and TCM
  • Bent or pushed-out pin in the switch or TCM connector
  • Corrosion or water damage at the mode switch connector (common on steering column or shift assembly)
  • Failure of the mode switch assembly (contacts worn or stuck)
  • Blown related fuse or intermittent power supply to the switch

Fault status
