P071D — Transmission Mode Switch B Circuit

Causes

• Open or shorted wiring in the Mode Switch B circuit
• Corroded, loose or damaged connector(s) at the mode switch or TCM
• Faulty Transmission Mode Switch (mechanical or internal electrical failure)
• Poor or missing ground or power supply to the switch circuit
• Water intrusion or contamination at connectors
• Internal TCM input circuit fault or software issue

Symptoms

• Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or transmission warning lamp illuminated
• Incorrect gear selection or failure to engage selected drive mode
• Transmission stuck in limp/default mode or limited gears
• Erratic or harsh shifting, or no shift in certain modes
• Stored transmission-related fault codes and possible drivability complaints

What to check

• Connect a full-function OBD-II scan tool and read freeze frame and all stored codes (note any related transmission codes)
• View live data and monitor Mode Switch B signal while operating the mode selector (watch for expected state changes and stable values)
• Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the mode switch and TCM for corrosion, damage, pin push-out, water, or loose terminals
• Check fuses and power/ground circuits related to the transmission/selector switch circuit
• Perform wiggle test on harness with the ignition on while monitoring the live signal for intermittent changes
• Consult manufacturer service information and wiring diagrams for pinout and expected voltages

Signal parameters

• Typical reference: 5 V reference or switched 12 V supply (verify with vehicle wiring diagram)
• Expected signal: distinct voltage or digital state change when selecting different transmission modes (0 V, ~5 V or switched battery voltage depending on design)
• Open circuit: high resistance/infinite between switch terminal and TCM input
• Short to ground: near 0 V at signal terminal with switch active
• Short to battery: near 12 V at signal terminal regardless of switch position (if supply-fed)
