Causes

  • Low or contaminated automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level
  • Worn or burnt clutch pack or friction material for 4th/5th gear
  • Faulty shift solenoid(s) or solenoid harness/connectors
  • Valve body problems (sticking valves, clogged passages)
  • Low or irregular line pressure (worn pump, pressure regulator)
  • Faulty transmission range or speed sensors (input/turbine or output)

Symptoms

  • Harsh, delayed, or no shift between 4th and 5th gear
  • Transmission stays in 4th (or downshifts) and may rev high
  • Surging or slipping during 4→5 shift
  • Check Engine Light (MIL) or Transmission Warning light illuminated
  • Driveability issues at highway speeds (over-revving)
  • Transmission may go into limp/failsafe mode

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and all manufacturer-specific transmission codes with a capable scan tool
  • Record requested gear vs actual gear, turbine/input and output speed sensors, line pressure (if available), and solenoid command statuses while driving and during the fault
  • Verify ATF level, color, smell (burned), and presence of debris on the pan magnet or filter
  • Visually inspect transmission harness, connectors, and grounds for damage, corrosion, or looseness
  • Check shift solenoid resistances and compare to specifications
  • Command shift solenoids ON/OFF with scan tool to observe changes in behavior

Signal parameters

  • Shift solenoid command (ON/OFF or PWM duty cycle)
  • Shift solenoid current or resistance (Ω)
  • Requested gear (TCM command) vs actual gear/gear ratio
  • Input/turbine speed (RPM) and output speed (RPM)
  • Calculated gear ratio (input ÷ output) during 4th→5th shift
  • Line pressure (PSI) or hydraulic pressure during shift events

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data. Note mileage, ATF temp, and when fault set.
  2. Clear codes, road test or re-create conditions to see if P0784 returns and collect live data during the event (requested gear, actual gear, solenoid commands, speeds).
  3. Inspect ATF level, condition, and filter/pan for metal debris. Replace fluid/filter if contaminated or service interval overdue.
  4. Visually inspect wiring, connectors, and grounds related to transmission solenoids, sensors, and the TCM. Repair any corrosion or damage.
  5. Measure resistance of shift solenoids for 4th/5th shift circuit(s) and compare to spec. Check for intermittent opens/shorts using backprobe/oscilloscope while commanding solenoids.
  6. Command the relevant shift solenoid(s) with a scan tool and observe response (gear change, pressure change, or audible solenoid activity).
  7. If electrical and fluid checks pass, perform a line-pressure test while commanding shifts to confirm hydraulic pressure meets specification during 4→5 shift.
  8. Inspect valve body and internal solenoids for sticking, clogged screens, or bore wear if hydraulic pressure or valve response is abnormal. Replace or rebuild as required.
  9. If valve body and hydraulics are good, consider internal wear: clutch pack, bands, drums. Perform transmission removal and teardown diagnostics if indicated.
  10. Check for TCM/PCM calibration updates or proven module faults. Replace or reprogram module only after eliminating wiring, solenoid, hydraulic, and mechanical causes.
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform adaptation/reset procedures per manufacturer, and road test to verify proper 4→5 shifts and that the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Shift solenoid failure or intermittent electrical connection
  • Low/contaminated ATF causing slow/failed shift or valve binding
  • Valve body or internal hydraulic concern (sticking spool or cracked bore)
  • Worn clutch pack for higher gear preventing engagement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P0784 — 4-5 Shift Malfunction. The control module detected that the commanded shift to fifth gear failed, occurred outside expected time/parameters, or did not meet speed/ratio conditions. Investigate electrical (solenoid/wiring), hydraulic (ATF, line pressure, valve body), mechanical (clutch packs/bands), and control module/software causes.
