Causes

  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Worn or glazed clutch plates or band
  • Weak or leaking apply piston seal(s)
  • Faulty shift/pressure control solenoid or stuck valve in the valve body
  • Low hydraulic line/rail pressure (pump, pressure regulator)
  • Damaged friction element or internal mechanical failure

Symptoms

  • Gear slipping or flare when the gear that uses Friction Element H is commanded
  • Elevated engine RPM without corresponding vehicle acceleration
  • Delayed or harsh shifts into the affected gear
  • Transmission/AT warning lamp or Check Engine light illuminated
  • Possible limp-in mode with reduced performance
  • Transmission fluid may be dark, burnt smelling, or contain debris

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all stored/transient transmission codes with a capable scan tool
  • Monitor live data: requested gear, actual gear, input/output speeds, clutch apply status, line pressure, solenoid duty cycles, and fluid temperature
  • Visually inspect wiring harnesses and connectors to the transmission and solenoids for damage or corrosion
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell; sample for debris
  • Perform a road test to reproduce the condition while logging relevant parameters
  • Compare line/rail pressure to factory specification (use pressure gauge where required)

Signal parameters

  • Transmission input speed (Tach or input shaft sensor)
  • Transmission output/vehicle speed sensor
  • Clutch apply status (TCM commanded vs actual)
  • Line/rail hydraulic pressure (static and dynamic under load)
  • Shift/pressure solenoid duty cycle and current
  • Transmission fluid temperature

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: park on level surface, set parking brake, use wheel chocks and jack stands when required.
  2. Connect a factory-capable scan tool. Read and record P07A1 and any other codes or pending/continuous codes and freeze-frame data.
  3. Inspect fluid: check level, color and smell. If fluid is low or contaminated, address fluid condition (top up or change) and filter if applicable, then retest.
  4. Clear codes and perform a controlled road test while logging input/output speeds, line pressure, solenoid duty cycles and commanded clutch apply. Reproduce slip if possible.
  5. If slip is present, compare line pressure and apply pressure against specification. If low pressure, test pump output and pressure regulator/relief valve operation.
  6. Command the related shift/pressure solenoid(s) using the scan tool (active tests) and observe current draw and duty response. Check for electrical faults (voltage, resistance, short to ground).
  7. Inspect valve body for stuck valves or contamination if solenoid/pressure anomalies are present. Clean or repair as required per service manual.
  8. If hydraulic tests pass but slip continues, consider internal mechanical inspection: check clutch pack wear, piston seals, input drum and hub condition. This may require transmission removal/partial disassembly.
  9. Repair or replace failed components (solenoid, valve body, seals, clutch pack, pump) as indicated by tests. Use correct fluid type and fill to specification after repair.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and retest under the same conditions to verify the fault is resolved. Document results and advise if further internal overhaul is required.

Likely causes

  • Contaminated or low fluid reducing clutch apply pressure
  • Valve body or solenoid not modulating apply pressure correctly
  • Worn friction plates/clutches that cannot hold torque
  • Internal hydraulic leak (piston seal or separator plate)
  • Intermittent wiring or connector issues to the solenoid/TCM

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TCM detected excessive slip on Friction Element H and set DTC P07A1. Symptoms may include slip, RPM flare, harsh or delayed shifts, and illumination of the transmission/engine warning lamp. Monitor line pressure, solenoid control and clutch apply status for diagnostic direction.
