Causes

  • Faulty or stuck shift/pressure control solenoid
  • Hydraulic valve or spool in valve body stuck or clogged
  • Low, dirty, or overheated transmission fluid
  • Internal hydraulic leak in the clutch pack or piston
  • Damaged clutch pack, piston, or seals
  • Wiring or connector fault to solenoid or pressure sensor

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • No torque converter lockup or a clutch pack failing to engage
  • Harsh, delayed, or slipping shifts
  • Reduced fuel economy and drivability
  • Transmission may fail to hold a gear under load
  • Possible limp-home mode or reduced performance

What to check

  • Read and record all transmission-related DTCs and freeze frame data with a scan tool
  • Visual inspection of transmission fluid level, color, smell and contamination
  • Check transmission fluid temperature when running tests (perform some tests at normal operating temp)
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or poor pins to the suspected solenoid/pressure sensor
  • Monitor live data: solenoid duty cycles, requested vs actual clutch status, line pressure, input and output speeds
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to spec

Signal parameters

  • Commanded solenoid duty cycle (%)
  • Actual solenoid current (A) or resistance (Ω)
  • Transmission line pressure (kPa or psi)
  • Clutch apply pressure (kPa or psi) or accumulator pressure
  • Torque converter clutch (TCC) commanded/actual (on/off)
  • Input (turbine) speed (RPM)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and all stored codes. Note conditions when fault set (temp, gear, load).
  2. Visually inspect transmission fluid level and condition. Top up or replace if low/contaminated. Clear codes and retest.
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors for the affected solenoid(s) and pressure sensors. Repair any damage and check for secure connections.
  4. Using a scan tool, monitor commanded vs actual solenoid duty/current and clutch status while reproducing the symptom. Look for lack of response or abnormal values.
  5. Measure solenoid coil resistance at the connector (engine off). Compare to spec; check for short to ground or open circuit.
  6. Perform a controlled solenoid actuation test with a bi-directional scan tool (if available). Confirm valve movement and response in live data.
  7. Conduct a hydraulic line pressure test at idle and during commanded apply. Compare to specifications to identify low pressure or failure to build pressure.
  8. If electrical and pressure checks are good but the element still does not engage, remove and inspect valve body/solenoid assembly for sticking spools, debris, or worn components. Clean or replace as required.
  9. Inspect clutch pack, piston, and seals for wear or leaks if internal pressure loss is suspected. Replace worn hydraulic components or friction elements as necessary.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform road test and recheck live data and for reappearance of the code. Update TCM/PCM software if a manufacturer update is available and relevant.

Likely causes

  • Solenoid electrical fault (open, short, poor ground, corroded connector)
  • Valve body contamination restricting spool movement
  • Low line pressure due to pump wear or external/internal leaks
  • Clutch friction material worn or piston seals leaking
  • Incorrect solenoid duty cycle from TCM (software or TCM fault)
  • Fluid degraded causing slow apply or drag on friction element

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission friction element commanded ON but did not engage (Performance/Stuck Off). Verify solenoid, hydraulic pressure, fluid condition, and valve body integrity.
