Incorrect gear 2 displacement

Causes

  • Faulty or sticking shift solenoid(s) responsible for 2nd gear
  • Valve body blockage or internal leakage (worn bore, stuck spool)
  • Low, contaminated, or incorrect transmission fluid
  • Worn/clutch pack or band related to 2nd gear
  • Faulty input/output/turbine speed sensors or their circuits
  • Damaged wiring, poor connector pin contact or intermittent CAN/TCM communications

Symptoms

  • Harsh, delayed, or soft engagement into 2nd gear
  • Transmission slipping in 2nd gear or poor acceleration
  • Incorrect gear indicated on dash or unexpected gear changes
  • Limp-home mode or reduced shift availability
  • Transmission fluid leaks or elevated temperature
  • DTC stored and possibly illuminated MIL/Transmission warning light

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and all stored transmission codes with a capable scan tool
  • Verify correct transmission fluid level, color and smell; replace if burnt or contaminated
  • Inspect transmission electrical connectors and wiring harness for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Check for available TCM software/firmware updates and known service bulletins
  • Perform a road test with live data logging of speed sensors, commanded gear, actual gear and solenoid status
  • Bench-test or actuate shift solenoids via scan tool where possible

Signal parameters

  • Commanded gear (TCM request) vs actual/measured gear
  • Transmission input shaft (turbine) speed (rpm)
  • Transmission output shaft speed (vehicle speed) (rpm)
  • Calculated gear ratio (input/output) or ratio error
  • Shift solenoid(s) status and duty cycle for second gear (S1, S2 or gear-specific solenoids)
  • Line pressure and second-gear clutch apply pressure

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function diagnostic scanner. Read and save all codes, freeze-frame and live data. Note whether multiple transmission codes are present.
  2. Verify fluid level, condition and temperature. Top or change fluid and filter if level incorrect or fluid is contaminated/burnt.
  3. Clear codes and perform a controlled road test while logging commanded gear, actual gear, input/output speeds, solenoid statuses and line pressure. Recreate the symptom.
  4. If ratio/gear error reappears, inspect wiring and connectors to transmission solenoids, speed sensors and TCM for damage or corrosion. Wiggle-test harness while logging for intermittent faults.
  5. Command/actuate suspect solenoid(s) with scan tool and observe changes in commanded vs actual gear and apply pressures. Replace any solenoid that fails to respond or shows abnormal current/duty behaviour.
  6. Measure static and dynamic line pressure and clutch apply pressures per factory procedure. Compare to spec. Low pressure suggests pump, leakage, worn clutches or valve body faults.
  7. Test speed sensors (input/output) signals with oscilloscope or scanner; replace sensor if signal absent or erratic.
  8. If electrical and pressure checks pass but fault persists, remove valve body for inspection: check for worn bores, stuck spools, contaminated passages, or damaged separator plate/solenoid pack.
  9. If internal component wear (clutches/gears) is suspected from pressure or mechanical tests, recommend transmission removal and internal inspection or rebuild.
  10. After repair or component replacement, clear codes and perform adaptation/TCM relearn procedures as required, then road test to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Shift solenoid electrical fault (open, short, intermittent) or sticking solenoid
  • Low level or degraded transmission fluid causing poor hydraulic pressure
  • Valve body internal leakage or sticking valve
  • Faulty transmission speed sensor (input or output) or bad sensor signal
  • Worn clutch pack for 2nd gear or internal mechanical wear

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TCM detected incorrect displacement/ratio for 2nd gear; measured gear parameters are outside expected range. Fault stored — investigation of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems required.
