Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and related codes with a scan tool; note conditions when code set
  • Visually inspect clutch switch, mounting, and connector for damage, corrosion or water ingress
  • Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or Service Procedures for Land Rover clutch switch concerns
  • Backprobe the switch connector and check for reference voltage at the ECU-side pin with key ON (typically a pull-up to reference voltage — see vehicle spec)
  • Measure switch output: verify closed vs open voltage levels and continuity to ground when actuated
  • Inspect harness for pinched/chafed wiring, especially near pedal or bulkhead; wiggle harness while monitoring signal for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Typical idle/open state: approx. reference voltage (often ~5 V) on switch circuit when switch is open — vehicle-specific
  • Low state (fault/closed to ground): near 0 V when circuit is pulled-low or shorted to ground
  • Switch continuity: should change state when pedal depressed/released — continuity to ground when switch closed (if designed as ground-switched)
  • Use a lab scope for clean edge transitions and to detect chatter or intermittent grounding

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs and live data; note when code last set and conditions (engine temp, pedal position).
  2. Attempt to reproduce fault while monitoring clutch switch signal with a DVOM or scope; observe voltage when pedal is pressed and released.
  3. Visually inspect switch and connector; if corrosion or damage present, repair or replace connector and retest.
  4. Backprobe at the switch and at the ECU connector to isolate whether fault is at switch or in wiring. Check continuity and resistance between switch terminal and ECU input with connector disconnected.
  5. If wiring shows open or high resistance, repair harness (splice, replace damaged section) and protect against chafing. If wiring shows short to ground, isolate sections to find short and repair.
  6. Replace the clutch pedal switch if switch fails bench or in-circuit tests. Adjust switch position per manufacturer procedure after replacement.
  7. After repair, clear codes and perform operational test (multiple key cycles, attempt to start, test cruise and transmission related behaviors). Verify the code does not return and that live data shows expected voltages.
  8. If wiring and switch test good and issue persists, inspect related fuses/grounds and consider module input fault; consult Land Rover diagnostics before replacing control modules.
