Shift time is very long

Causes
- Low or degraded transmission fluid level or incorrect fluid type
- Weak or intermittent hydraulic line/line pressure (worn pump or pressure regulator)
- Faulty or sticking shift/pressure control solenoid(s)
- Valve body contamination or valve sticking
- Worn clutch packs or bands inside the transmission
- Torque converter problems (lockup clutch or hydraulic circuit)
Symptoms
- Delayed or unusually long shift between gears
- Missed or soft shifts or shift flare
- Transmission slipping feeling on acceleration
- Illuminated transmission or check engine lamp
- Vehicle may enter limp/neutral safe mode
- Reduced drivability and poor fuel economy
What to check
- Scan for additional transmission and engine DTCs; record freeze frame data
- Check transmission fluid level, color, and smell (burnt odor)
- Verify correct fluid type and service history
- Observe live data: commanded gear, actual gear, shift time, line pressure (if available), solenoid status, vehicle speed
- Perform electrical checks on solenoid connectors and wiring for continuity, shorts and damaged insulation
- Actuate solenoids with a scan tool to confirm response
Signal parameters
- Commanded shift time vs measured shift time (ms)
- Transmission line/rail pressure (kPa or bar)
- Shift/pressure solenoid commanded state (ON/OFF, PWM duty)
- Actual gear/gear ratio reported by TCM
- Transmission fluid temperature (°C/°F)
- Vehicle speed sensor and engine RPM during shift
Diagnostic algorithm
- Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear codes and test drive to reproduce while monitoring live data (gear command, actual gear, shift time, TCM inputs).
- Check transmission fluid level, condition and type. Top up or replace fluid if low, dirty or incorrect. Recheck operation after proper fluid level is confirmed.
- Using a scan tool, monitor solenoid commands and use active tests to exercise shift and pressure solenoids. Note response and any errors.
- Inspect wiring and connectors to transmission solenoids and sensors for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation or broken wires. Repair as necessary.
- Perform a static line pressure test with a mechanical gauge under specified conditions to verify adequate pressure and compare to factory specs.
- If line pressure is low, inspect pump output and pressure regulator/valve body for wear or blockage. Replace pump or rebuild valve body as required.
- If solenoids fail to respond electrically but wiring is good, replace suspect solenoid(s) and retest.
- If hydraulic and electrical tests pass but shifts remain long, consider internal wear (clutch packs, bands) or torque converter malfunction—perform a transmission removal and inspection or rebuild as indicated.
- Check for TCM software updates or TSBs before replacing TCM. Replace TCM only after other causes are ruled out.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform extended road test under varied conditions to verify normal shift timing and that P0896 does not return.
Likely causes
- Low/contaminated transmission fluid or incorrect fluid type
- Pressure control or shift solenoid failure (electrical or hydraulic)
- Valve body contamination or sticking valves
- Reduced line pressure due to pump wear or regulator fault
- Worn friction elements (clutch packs) causing slow engagement
Fault status
Status
