Control of pressure control solenoid C - high circuit

Causes

  • Short to battery voltage on the solenoid C control wire
  • Open or high-resistance wiring or connector (intermittent contact)
  • Corroded or damaged connector pins
  • Failed pressure control solenoid C (internal short or open)
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM) driver circuit
  • Blown fuse or poor ground affecting the TCM power/logic

Symptoms

  • MIL/Check Engine lamp illuminated
  • Transmission may go into limp/limited transmission mode
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifting
  • Possible loss of line pressure causing slipping or poor engagement
  • Diagnostic trouble codes related to other transmission solenoids or pressure sensors

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame data and all stored transmission codes
  • Verify battery voltage and main power/ground to TCM
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or pinned terminals
  • Check relevant fuses and fusible links for the transmission/TCM circuits
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance with harness disconnected (compare to OEM spec)
  • Back-probe/control-wire voltage at the solenoid while commanding from a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Nominal solenoid coil resistance: typically ~10–40 ohms (consult OEM spec)
  • Supply voltage to harness: approx. battery voltage (~11–14.5 V with engine running)
  • Expected control signal: PWM from TCM; frequency often in tens to a few hundred Hz (check OEM)
  • When commanded ON (low-side driver): control-wire voltage near ground (
  • When commanded OFF: control-wire voltage near battery voltage (~12 V)
  • High-circuit condition: control-wire measures near battery voltage when the TCM expects a low or sees voltage higher than allowed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the code with a scan tool and record freeze frame and any related DTCs. Clear codes and see if P0971 returns.
  2. Visually inspect the solenoid connector, wiring harness and TCM connector for damage, corrosion, loose pins or water intrusion.
  3. With ignition off, disconnect the solenoid connector and measure coil resistance across the solenoid terminals. Compare to OEM specification.
  4. Check for short to battery: with harness connected, probe the control wire and measure voltage with ignition ON (no command). A steady battery voltage may indicate a short to B+ or open driver.
  5. Command the solenoid ON/OFF from a capable scan tool while monitoring the control-wire voltage or using an oscilloscope to observe PWM and switching behavior.
  6. If the control wire is high (near battery) when the TCM commands ON (low), isolate by disconnecting the solenoid and re-testing. If fault clears with solenoid disconnected the solenoid or harness is suspect.
  7. Check continuity between solenoid connector and TCM connector for opens or high resistance; check for shorts to battery power or chassis ground.
  8. Inspect and verify TCM grounds and power supply voltages; repair any poor grounds or power connections.
  9. If wiring and solenoid test good, consider TCM output driver failure — verify with manufacturer procedures before replacing the TCM.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform a road test or functional test to confirm proper operation and that the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Wiring chafe shorting to B+ near the transmission
  • Connector pushed out, corroded or contaminated at the solenoid or TCM
  • Solenoid coil internally shorted to battery
  • TCM output transistor failed (stuck high)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
