Causes

  • Open or high-resistance connection in phase V wiring or connector
  • Damaged or shorted motor winding (phase V)
  • Faulty current sensor (hall-effect or CT) for phase V
  • Compressor inverter/driver malfunction or lost PWM output on phase V
  • Blown fuse, relay, or contactor affecting that phase
  • Low battery/system voltage or poor ground affecting inverter output

Symptoms

  • Reduced or no A/C cooling performance
  • Compressor not engaging or running intermittently
  • Malfunction indicator light (MIL) or A/C warning message
  • Stored diagnostic trouble codes related to A/C compressor or inverter
  • Unusual noise from compressor or inverter (in some cases)

What to check

  • Retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data with a professional scan tool; record active/confirmed status and related codes
  • Confirm customer complaint and conditions when fault occurred (engine off/on, accessory loads, ambient temperature)
  • Visually inspect compressor, inverter/driver, wiring harnesses, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or moisture
  • Check fuses, relays, and high-voltage contactors related to the A/C compressor circuit
  • Verify vehicle battery/auxiliary system voltage and good ground connections
  • Observe live data: phase currents, inverter outputs, compressor command, and any current-sensor values

Signal parameters

  • Expected: three-phase compressor currents of similar magnitude and waveform when commanded ON (no single phase near zero while others are normal)
  • Current sensors: hall-effect or current transformer providing phase current values to inverter or control module; outputs reported via CAN or analog inputs
  • Typical diagnostic indicators: balanced RMS currents across phases, similar phase-to-phase voltage waveforms from inverter under load
  • Abnormal: phase V current significantly lower than the other two phases, near zero, or erratic compared with expected PWM/inverter signals

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTC P0D7C and any related codes; note freeze frame and occurrence conditions. Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault under the same conditions.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of phase V wiring, connectors, and ground points; repair any physical damage or corrosion.
  3. Verify supply voltage and fuses/relays/contractors for the compressor/inverter; confirm proper operation of contactors when compressor is commanded.
  4. With appropriate PPE and following HV safety procedures, measure phase currents using a suitable clamp meter or current probe while commanding the compressor ON. Compare phase V to the other phases.
  5. If phase V current is low, measure phase-to-phase resistance of the compressor motor (with HV system de-energized) to check for open or high-resistance winding. Check phase-to-ground insulation.
  6. If motor windings appear normal, inspect and test the inverter/driver outputs. Use an oscilloscope to view PWM/voltage waveforms on all three output phases when compressor is commanded (HV precautions required).
  7. Test or substitute the current sensor or harness if sensor output appears incorrect while other signals are normal.
  8. If inverter output for phase V is missing or abnormal, follow inverter diagnostics (driver module replacement may be required). If inverter outputs are correct but motor phase current remains low, suspect internal compressor motor fault and consider compressor replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and verify repair by commanding compressor multiple times under normal conditions and confirming balanced phase currents and restored A/C operation.

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector or broken conductor in phase V circuit
  • Faulty inverter/driver channel producing no or reduced output on phase V
  • Damaged compressor motor winding or internal connection for phase V
  • Faulty current sensing hardware or harness for phase V

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored when the control module detects phase V current below the configured threshold while the A/C compressor is commanded on. May be recorded as active or stored; additional compressor/inverter or HV-system related codes may be present.
