Causes

  • Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the A/C distribution valve circuit
  • Open or damaged wiring between the controller and valve B (broken conductor, chafing, connector corrosion)
  • Poor or corroded connector pins at the valve or wiring harness
  • Failed refrigerant distribution valve (open coil internally)
  • Poor or missing ground for the valve circuit
  • Controller/ECM/BCM driver fault

Symptoms

  • A/C system may not change refrigerant routing properly (reduced or no cooling in certain modes)
  • HVAC may not switch modes correctly or system displays A/C fault message
  • Possible inability to engage compressor or reduced compressor operation depending on system logic
  • DTC P0EE3 stored and possible MIL or HVAC warning lamp illuminated

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and related A/C HVAC codes with a scan tool
  • Visual inspection: check valve B connector, wiring harness routing, evidence of corrosion, water intrusion, heat damage or pin damage
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for the A/C control circuit
  • Using a scan tool, attempt to command the refrigerant distribution valve B and observe any change in status or live data
  • Backprobe valve B connector and check for supply voltage and ground while the valve is commanded
  • Measure coil resistance of the valve with connector disconnected (power off) per service manual

Signal parameters

  • Control signal type: switched voltage or PWM from controller (varies by manufacturer)
  • Expected command voltage: typically 0–12 V when driven (refer to vehicle-specific manual)
  • Coil resistance: typically low ohms to tens of ohms for solenoid valves (check service specification for exact value)
  • When commanded ON: supply voltage present at valve feed and ground path intact; when OFF: command voltage removed or driven opposite (depends on design)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and note any related HVAC/DTCs. Record freeze frame and attempt to re-create fault.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of valve B connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loosened pins.
  3. Check fuses/relays that feed the A/C distribution valve circuit; replace if blown and retest.
  4. With ignition ON and A/C requested, backprobe the valve B connector. Command the valve with a scan tool and observe supply voltage/ground. If no voltage, trace supply fuse/relay and wiring.
  5. Disconnect the valve and measure coil resistance with multimeter (power off). Compare to specification. An open (infinite) reading indicates a failed valve coil.
  6. If coil resistance is normal and no command voltage is present at the connector, perform continuity check from the connector to the controller pin to find open circuit or short.
  7. Inspect and clean connectors; repair or replace damaged wiring/terminals. Reconnect and retest.
  8. If wiring and connectors are good but the controller is not commanding, consult vehicle wiring diagrams and test the controller output. Replace controller only after all wiring and valve tests confirm it is at fault.
  9. After repair or part replacement, clear codes and verify proper operation under varied HVAC modes and drive conditions to ensure the fault does not return.

  • Blown fuse or bad relay supplying valve power
