  • Use scan tool to command EGR open/close while observing position feedback and engine response
  • Check vacuum supply and vacuum solenoid operation (vacuum‑type EGR) or check electrical control (stepper/motor type)

Signal parameters

  • EGR position sensor: typical 0–5 V position feedback (exact closed/open voltages vary by model)
  • Closed valve feedback often near lower end (~0.5–1.5 V); fully open near higher end (~3–4.5 V) — verify with OEM data
  • When commanded to move, position feedback should change smoothly and reach expected voltage within ~0.5–2 seconds (model dependent)
  • EGR control solenoid: correct resistance per spec (usually a few ohms to tens of ohms) and should show switching PWM duty cycle when commanded
  • Stepper/actuator current draw normally limited; excessive current/no movement indicates binding/seized actuator
  • Vacuum-operated EGR: vacuum source should reach required vacuum (check in kPa or inHg) when solenoid is energized

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function scan tool; read and record P1014 and any related codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Clear codes, start engine, and attempt to re-create fault while monitoring live EGR position, commanded position, engine load, RPM and intake manifold pressure.
  3. Visually inspect EGR valve, hoses, connectors and wiring for heat damage, corrosion, broken pins or loose connections.
  4. Backprobe EGR position sensor and control circuit. With scan tool, command valve open/close and confirm position feedback changes. Note response time and smoothness.
  5. For vacuum systems: verify vacuum supply and solenoid operation; apply vacuum directly to valve to check movement.
  6. For electronic/stepper valves: measure actuator resistance and monitor control waveform with oscilloscope; listen for motor/step sounds during commanded cycle.
  7. Remove EGR valve and inspect for carbon deposits. Clean if deposits are moderate; do not damage sensors or housings. If valve is mechanically seized or sensor is damaged, replace the valve or sensor assembly.
  8. Inspect and clean EGR passages and EGR cooler; replace cooler if internally blocked or leaking.
  9. If wiring and valve test OK but fault returns, check PCM outputs, grounds and relevant fuses/relays. Consider reprogramming PCM only after eliminating mechanical and wiring causes.
  10. After repair, erase codes and perform road test with live data logging to confirm proper EGR response and that P1014 does not return.
