Causes

  • Visually inspect harness routing for chafing or contact with hot components
  • Check related fuses and relays for the heater circuit
  • Monitor live data: heater status, bank/sensor voltages and PID values
  • Compare heater resistance measured at the sensor connector to the OEM specification

Signal parameters

  • Expected heater resistance: refer to Land Rover service data; typical narrow-range values (example: low single-digit ohms to low tens of ohms) — verify with OEM spec
  • Heater supply voltage: near battery voltage with heater commanded on (verify with key on / engine conditions per manual)
  • Heater current draw: increases when heater is commanded; excessive current may indicate low resistance
  • Diagnostic trouble code set when resistance below PCM threshold or when driver detects abnormal current

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the code and note any additional stored/related codes. Record freeze-frame and live data.
  2. Visually inspect the oxygen sensor, connector, and harness for obvious damage, corrosion, or contamination. Repair as needed.
  3. With the ignition off, disconnect the O2 sensor connector. Measure the heater element resistance across the heater pins at the sensor connector with a digital ohmmeter. Compare to OEM spec.
  4. If the measured resistance at the sensor is low (below spec), replace the O2 sensor and retest. If within spec, continue.
  5. Check resistance from the heater pins to vehicle ground with the harness connected/disconnected to identify shorts to ground. Look for near-zero readings indicating a short.
  6. With the ignition on (engine off unless specified), probe the heater supply circuit for correct voltage when the heater is commanded on (use scan tool to command heater if available). Verify voltage and that the PCM driver is switching as expected.
  7. Perform continuity checks between the sensor connector and PCM heater driver pin(s). Check for short circuits between heater supply and other circuits.
  8. Repair any damaged wiring, terminals or connectors found. If wiring and connector are good but code persists after sensor replacement, consider PCM/driver fault and consult technical service information before replacement.
  9. Clear codes and perform a test drive or monitor readiness until system completes self-tests. Verify code does not return.
