Injector Circuit Cylinder 3 Intermittent

Causes

  • Damaged or corroded injector connector for cylinder 3
  • Broken, shorted, or high-resistance wiring between injector and PCM
  • Faulty fuel injector (intermittent internal fault)
  • Poor ground or lost battery power feed to the injector circuit
  • Faulty injector driver output in the PCM (intermittent)
  • Faulty fuse, relay, or fuel injector power supply issue

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated, code P1228 stored or pending
  • Intermittent rough idle or misfire on cylinder 3 (may set P0303)
  • Possible decreased power under load or stumble
  • Occasional hard start if injector not firing consistently
  • No obvious symptoms when fault is not present (intermittent)

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and pending codes; check for related codes (P0203, P0303, other injector circuit codes)
  • Visually inspect connector and wiring for cylinder 3: pins, corrosion, damage, or water intrusion
  • Backprobe injector connector with key ON/engine running to verify power and switch signal
  • Measure injector coil resistance with a multimeter and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring live data or injector driver signal to reproduce intermittent fault
  • Check fuses and relays for fuel/injector power circuits

Signal parameters

  • Injector supply voltage at connector (key ON, engine OFF): ~battery voltage on the constant power terminal
  • Injector driver behavior: pulsed switching (low-side or high-side depending on design); look for square pulses when cranking/running
  • Typical pulse width varies with load: ~1–10 ms (idle to high load); frequency increases with rpm
  • Expected resting signals: one terminal ~12V, the other open/high impedance until pulsed to near 0V by PCM (low-side switch)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame, mode 6, and live data. Note associated codes and operating conditions when fault set.
  2. Visually inspect cylinder 3 injector connector and harness. Repair any obvious damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the injector connector: verify constant battery voltage on the power feed and check that the control pin is not shorted to battery or ground.
  4. Measure injector coil resistance and compare to factory spec. If out of range or open/short intermittent, replace injector.
  5. Use a noid light or oscilloscope while cranking/running to confirm injector pulse pattern at cylinder 3. If pulses are missing or intermittent, note cadence.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on wiring and connectors while monitoring the injector signal or live engine response to try to reproduce the intermittent fault.
  7. Swap injector 3 with another cylinder’s injector (and clear codes) to see if the code follows the injector. If it follows, replace the injector.
  8. If the code remains on cylinder 3 after swapping injectors, suspect wiring or PCM driver. Perform continuity and resistance checks from the injector connector to the PCM pin. Repair any short/open.
  9. Check for correct ground integrity and supply fuses/relays. Repair/replace as needed.
  10. If wiring and power/ground are good and the injector is known good, consider PCM/module diagnosis or replacement following manufacturer procedures; consult wiring diagrams and service information before replacing PCM.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and test drive to confirm the issue does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at injector 3
  • Wire chafing/short to ground or voltage when engine moves
  • Injector 3 internal coil intermittent or open under heat
  • Poor low-side driver contact at PCM (intermittent)
