Causes

  • Blown fuse for fuel pump circuit
  • Faulty fuel pump relay (contacts or coil)
  • Open wiring or connector (broken wire, corrosion, pin pushed out) in relay control or pump supply circuit
  • Short to ground on the relay control feed from the ECM
  • Poor or missing ground at relay or pump
  • Failed fuel pump or pump module causing abnormal load/feedback

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with P1230 stored
  • Engine cranks but will not start (no fuel delivery)
  • Intermittent no-start or stalling while driving
  • No audible fuel pump prime when ignition is turned on
  • Low or no fuel rail pressure on test

What to check

  • Scan for P1230 and any related codes; record freeze-frame and readiness status
  • Listen for fuel pump prime when ignition ON (key to ON, do not crank)
  • Visually inspect fuse(s), relay, relay socket, wiring harness and connectors for damage or corrosion
  • Check fuel pump fuse continuity and fuse voltage with key ON
  • Backprobe relay socket while commanding fuel pump (with scan tool or crank) to verify control voltage/ground and battery voltage to pump feed
  • Measure coil resistance of suspect relay and compare to specification or swap with identical known-good relay

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at relay power terminal with ignition ON or when commanded: ~11–14.5 V
  • Control/drive terminal when ECM commands relay: either near battery voltage (switched power style) or pulled to ground (switch-to-ground style) — should change state when commanded
  • Relay coil resistance (typical range): ~50–200 Ω (varies by relay) — open coil = OL
  • Open-circuit indication: very high resistance / OL between relay coil and expected circuit path
  • Short-to-ground indication: very low resistance (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze-frame and note conditions when code set; verify battery is charged
  2. Visually inspect fuse(s), relay, relay socket and wiring for obvious damage or corrosion; repair as needed
  3. Confirm fuel pump operation: with ignition ON listen for prime; if silent, check pump fuse and relay power terminal for battery voltage
  4. Backprobe relay connector with connector in place and command fuel pump using scan tool or crank engine; verify: battery feed present at supply pin, control pin changes state when commanded, and ground continuity is present
  5. If control pin is not changing when commanded, test relay by swapping with identical known-good relay; if pump runs, replace relay
  6. If swapping relay does not help, measure continuity between ECM driver pin and relay connector for opens/shorts; repair broken wires or damaged connectors
  7. If control wire is shorted to ground, isolate and repair wiring harness damage before replacing ECM
  8. If wiring and relay test OK but pump still will not run, bench-test or apply regulated 12V directly to pump (follow safety procedures: relieve fuel pressure, work in ventilated area) to verify pump function, then replace pump or module if faulty
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform functional test and verify fuel pressure and that P1230 does not return

Likely causes

  • Faulty or corroded connector at fuel pump relay or fuse (very common)
  • Blown fuse or failed relay
  • Open/broken wire between ECM and relay socket
  • Short to ground in relay control circuit
  • Faulty relay coil or contacts

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fuel pump relay circuit fault detected (open or grounded). ECM reports abnormal relay control/supply; fuel pump may not be energized.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
