Causes

  • Faulty/failing fuel injector (cylinder 3)
  • Open or short in injector wiring harness or connector
  • Corroded/loose connector or poor pin contact
  • Faulty injector driver inside the ECU/PCM
  • Low battery/weak charging system causing abnormal signals
  • Fuel contamination or mechanical sticking of the injector

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration from cylinder 3
  • Misfire code or misfire felt on acceleration (possible P0303)
  • Reduced engine power, hesitation or poor throttle response
  • Increased fuel consumption or fuel smell (if leaking)
  • Possible hard start or no-start in severe cases

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and live data with a diagnostic scanner (confirm P1295 and related codes)
  • Visually inspect injector 3 connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, or chafing
  • Check battery/charging system voltage (ensure >11.5V during cranking)
  • Back-probe injector connector with engine cranking/running to observe signal behaviour
  • Measure injector coil resistance (with connector disconnected) and compare to spec
  • Wiggle wiring harness while monitoring live data or scanner for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance varies by type — commonly ~2–5 Ω for low-impedance injectors or ~10–16 Ω for high-impedance types (consult factory spec)
  • Supply voltage at injector connector (key ON) ≈ battery voltage (11–14 V)
  • Injector driver switches the injector to ground — back-probed signal will show a pulsed waveform when running (pulse width varies with load)
  • No-load / off state: no pulsed ground; energized: pulsed switching frequency and pulse width per engine demand

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all stored and pending codes and freeze-frame data. Clear codes and attempt to re-run test to reproduce the fault.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of injector 3 connector, wiring harness, and ground points. Repair any obvious damage or corrosion.
  3. With ignition OFF, disconnect injector 3 and measure coil resistance; compare to factory spec. If out of range, replace injector.
  4. With key ON, check for battery voltage on the injector supply pin. With engine cranking/running, back-probe the driver pin to confirm pulsed switching to ground using a multimeter or scope.
  5. Wiggle the harness and connector while monitoring live data or the scope to check for intermittent faults.
  6. Swap injector 3 with a known-good injector from another cylinder. If the fault/code follows the injector, replace the injector. If it stays on cylinder 3, focus on wiring/ECU.
  7. If wiring appears intact but driver output is not switching correctly (no pulse or shorted), isolate wiring to the ECU and check for shorts to battery or ground. Repair wiring as needed.
  8. If wiring is good and the connector and injector are OK but the driver output in the ECU is faulty, consider ECU diagnostics/repair or replacement per manufacturer guidance.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a test drive to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at injector 3
  • Open or short in the injector power/ground/driver wire to cylinder 3
  • Failed injector solenoid (electrical or mechanical)
  • Failed injector driver circuit in the ECU/PCM
  • Intermittent wiring damage revealed by movement/wiggle test
