Causes

  • Open or shorted injector wiring (to battery or ground)
  • Corroded/loose connector or damaged pins at injector
  • Defective fuel injector (coil open, internal short, or mechanically stuck)
  • Faulty ECU/PCM injector driver
  • Poor battery/charging voltage or blown fuse/relay supplying injector circuit
  • Poor ground connection or broken engine harness

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) on
  • Rough idle or vibration, especially at idle
  • Misfire or specific cylinder misfire detected (cylinder 3)
  • Loss of power, hesitation or poor throttle response
  • Increased fuel consumption, black smoke or strong fuel smell if injector stuck open

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and related DTCs with a scan tool; note conditions when fault occurred
  • Visually inspect injector 3 connector, wiring harness and nearby harness for chafing, heat damage or corrosion
  • Check fuses and relays for fuel/injector supply and verify battery/charging voltage
  • Measure injector 3 coil resistance at the harness (engine off) and compare to specification
  • Backprobe injector connector while engine cranking or idling to verify supply voltage and ECU switching (use DVOM or oscilloscope)
  • Perform wiggle test on harness/connector while monitoring scanned data or injection signal

Signal parameters

  • Injector supply voltage: ~battery voltage (approx. 11–14.5 V) at the constant feed terminal
  • Injector driver: ECU switches the injector to ground (low-side switching) — expect pulsed ground on injection events
  • Injector coil resistance: typical ranges (varies by design) — low-impedance types ≈ 1–3 Ω, high-impedance types ≈ 10–16 Ω (refer to vehicle service manual for exact spec)
  • Injector pulse width: variable with engine load; typical injection pulses ~1–20 ms depending on rpm/load
  • Expected waveform: clean square-ish PWM pulses when viewed with an oscilloscope; absence, short, or irregular pulses indicate driver/wiring fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read DTCs and freeze-frame data. Note engine conditions, battery voltage and any historic codes. Clear codes and attempt to recreate fault.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of injector 3 connector, wiring, pins and nearby harness. Repair obvious damage/corrosion.
  3. With engine off and battery disconnected if required by vehicle procedure, measure injector 3 coil resistance at the connector. Compare to service spec. Replace injector if out of range.
  4. Reconnect, backprobe the injector connector. With key on/engine cranking or running, verify constant supply voltage at the feed terminal and that the ECU provides a switching/ground signal at the driver terminal. Use an oscilloscope for best results.
  5. If supply is missing, trace power feed (fuse/relay/ignition feed). If switching is absent, check continuity from injector driver pin to ECU; look for short to power or ground.
  6. Perform a wiggle test while monitoring live data or waveform; look for intermittent changes. If possible and safe, swap injector 3 with another cylinder’s injector and rerun scan to see if code follows the injector (if it follows, replace injector).
  7. If the problem remains on cylinder 3 after swapping injectors, inspect wiring harness continuity and pin integrity between injector connector and ECU. Repair any opens/shorts.
  8. If wiring and injector test good but fault persists, suspect an ECU driver fault. Consult factory service manual for ECU tests; consider ECU repair/replacement per manufacturer guidance.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and road-test to verify fault does not return. Document findings and replaced parts.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or wiring to injector 3 (most common)
  • Failed injector coil or internal short
  • ECU driver channel fault (less common)
  • Poor supply or ground to injector circuit
