IC Cylinder 2 Not Toggling After Enable

Causes

  • Open or short in the ignition coil primary wiring (connector, harness damage, pin corrosion)
  • Faulty ignition coil (internal short/open)
  • Defective PCM/ignition driver transistor
  • Poor or missing ground or battery feed to coil circuit
  • Intermittent connection at coil connector (moisture/corrosion)
  • Related fuse, relay, or power distribution fault

Symptoms

  • Check Engine light with stored P1362
  • Misfire or rough running focused on cylinder 2 (may show P0302)
  • No spark on cylinder 2 (engine may be hard to start or not run)
  • Reduced power, hesitation or poor fuel economy
  • Possible intermittent fault if connector/wiring is damaged

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze frame; note any related misfire or cam/crank codes
  • Visually inspect coil 2 connector, wiring harness and PCM connector for damage or corrosion
  • With a scan tool, attempt to command (enable) ignition coil 2 and watch for status/feedback
  • Back-probe coil supply (key ON) for battery voltage and back-probe control pin while commanding coil
  • Measure coil primary resistance and compare to service manual spec
  • Swap coil 2 with another known-good coil (if identical) to see if fault follows the coil

Signal parameters

  • Coil supply: battery voltage (~12 V) present at the coil power terminal with key ON (verify exact spec in service manual)
  • Control signal: PCM switches the coil primary to ground (or provides PWM/dwell) when enabled; you should see switching on the control pin when commanded
  • Expected coil primary resistance: low value — check vehicle-specific service spec (do not rely on generic numbers)
  • Expected coil waveform: primary pulse/dwell when commanded; absence of switching indicates open circuit, stuck driver, or PCM issue
  • Scan tool status: PCM should report coil enabled when commanded; lack of status change is diagnostic

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture codes and freeze frame; identify related codes (misfire, injector, cam/crank, PCM).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of coil 2 connector, wiring, and engine/PCM grounds for corrosion, damage, or push-out pins.
  3. With key ON (engine off), verify battery voltage at the coil supply terminal. If missing, trace power feed, fuses and relays.
  4. Using a scan tool, command/enable coil 2 while observing the coil control pin with an oscilloscope or a suitable test light/voltmeter (back-probe). Look for switching/toggling.
  5. If there is supply voltage but no switching on the control pin when commanded, measure continuity between the PCM driver pin and the coil connector. Repair any open/shorts in wiring.
  6. Measure coil primary resistance and compare to spec. If coil shows open/short or out-of-spec values, replace coil and retest.
  7. Swap coil 2 with another identical cylinder coil. If the fault moves with the coil, replace the coil. If the fault stays at cylinder 2, suspect wiring or PCM.
  8. If wiring and coil check good but PCM still does not toggle the circuit when commanded, inspect PCM power/ground, reflash/perform software updates if available, and consider PCM replacement only after confirming external circuits are good.
  9. Clear codes and perform a road test or crank/run cycles to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Damaged coil control circuit wiring or connector for cylinder 2
  • Failed ignition coil at cylinder 2
  • PCM ignition driver fault or internal short
  • Poor ground or battery supply to the coil circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
