Misfire Detected Rough Road Data Not Available

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty or missing rough-road/vertical-acceleration sensor
  • Open/shorted wiring or connector to the rough-road sensor
  • Loss of CAN/network communication carrying rough-road data
  • Battery/charging system low voltage or intermittent power to sensors/PCM
  • PCM/software fault or corrupted configuration
  • Actual engine misfire (ignition, fuel, or mechanical) occurring while rough-road data unavailable

Symptoms

  • MIL (Check Engine Light) illuminated
  • Stored or pending misfire codes (P0300 or P0301–P0308)
  • Possible rough idle, hesitation, or reduced power from misfire
  • Scan tool shows 'Rough Road' status unavailable or sensor data missing
  • Inconsistent misfire detection or false misfire indications during driving

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending codes and capture freeze frame data
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and charging system under load
  • Inspect rough-road/vertical-acceleration sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose pins
  • Using a scan tool, monitor misfire counts, rough-road sensor output/availability, engine RPM, vehicle speed and CAN bus status
  • Check for related network U-codes (loss of comms) and test CAN bus for proper termination and activity
  • Review technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for this DTC on the specific Cadillac model/year

Signal parameters

  • Misfire_Cylinder_# or Misfire_Counts (per cylinder and total)
  • Rough_Road_Status or Vertical_Acceleration (m/s^2 or g)
  • Engine_RPM
  • Vehicle_Speed
  • Ignition_Coil_Primary/Secondary waveform (scope) where applicable
  • Short-term and Long-term Fuel Trim

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool. Record all stored/pending codes and freeze frame. Note conditions when code set (speed, RPM, load).
  2. Verify battery and charging system voltage. Correct low-voltage conditions before further diagnosis.
  3. Look for primary misfire codes (P0300, P0301–P0308). If present, diagnose the misfire (ignition, fuel, compression) per normal procedure.
  4. With the scan tool, observe the rough-road/vertical-accel sensor data or rough-road status while a technician drives the vehicle. Confirm whether the signal is present, plausible, and changes with bumps/road inputs.
  5. Visually inspect and wiggle-test sensor connector and wiring harness from sensor to PCM for intermittent faults. Repair any damaged wiring or corroded connectors.
  6. If no sensor data is present, check sensor reference power, ground and signal with a DVOM or oscilloscope following OEM pinouts. Repair open/shorts or poor grounds.
  7. Check CAN/network communication to the module supplying rough-road data. Diagnose any U-codes (lost communication) and repair accordingly.
  8. If wiring and network are good but sensor output is invalid, replace the rough-road/vertical-accel sensor and re-test.
  9. If the sensor and wiring are good and communication is stable, consider PCM software/firmware updates per TSB. If software update doesn’t clear issue, test/replace the PCM as a last resort.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test under the same conditions to verify the DTC does not return and misfire detection is working as expected.

Likely causes

  • Defective rough-road (vertical accel) sensor or mounting
  • Damaged harness/connector at the sensor or PCM
  • Intermittent CAN bus communications or module(s) not responding
  • Low battery voltage or poor ground affecting sensor/PCM operation
  • Pending/multiple cylinder misfires (P0300/P0301–P0308) with concurrent sensor fault
  • PCM needing software update or internal fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Misfire detected while rough-road (vertical acceleration) data was unavailable or not usable by the PCM. Misfire detection or filtering may be unreliable until rough-road input and related communications are restored.
