Causes

  • Blown fuse for cruise control or related circuits
  • Open, shorted or corroded wiring / connectors in cruise control circuit
  • Faulty brake switch or clutch switch (open when closed)
  • Faulty cruise control switch / steering column controls
  • Faulty cruise control module or engine control module (ECM/PCM)
  • Loss of vehicle speed signal (VSS) or bad speed sensor

Symptoms

  • Cruise control inoperative or will not set
  • Cruise disable or fault message on dash
  • Cruise may work intermittently
  • No response from cruise control stalk/buttons
  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated in some cases

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and related codes with a scan tool
  • Visual inspection: fuses, relays, connectors and wiring for damage/corrosion
  • Verify battery and charging system voltage (12–14.5 V) under load
  • Check operation and continuity of brake switch and clutch switch (where fitted)
  • Check cruise control switches on the steering column for correct operation
  • Monitor vehicle speed signal and related sensor data with a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Battery/terminal voltage: about 12–14.5 V with engine running
  • Brake/clutch switch output: toggles between ~0 V and battery voltage when operated
  • Cruise switch inputs: continuity or switch signal present when buttons pressed
  • Vehicle speed sensor (VSS): pulse or 0–5 V square wave proportional to speed
  • Throttle position sensor (TPS): steady 0.5–4.5 V depending on throttle position
  • CAN bus: differential signals ~2.5 V idle; check for communication errors

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a quality scan tool and verify P1660 plus any related codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Inspect fuses and relays for the cruise control and ECM circuits; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connectors for the cruise module, switches, brake and clutch switches; repair any damage or corrosion.
  4. Verify battery and charging system voltage; recharge or repair charging faults before further diagnosis.
  5. Test brake and clutch switches for correct operation and continuity; adjust or replace if out of tolerance.
  6. Operate cruise control switches while monitoring scan tool inputs to confirm switch signals reach the ECM/cruise module.
  7. Verify vehicle speed sensor output with a scope or scan tool; repair or replace VSS if missing or erratic.
  8. Check CAN/communication faults and repair wiring or connectors if communication errors are present.
  9. If wiring, switches and inputs are correct, test or substitute the cruise control module / ECM per manufacturer procedures.
  10. Clear codes and perform a road test to confirm repair; re-scan to ensure the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Bad or misadjusted brake/clutch switch preventing cruise enable
  • Blown fuse or poor ground for cruise control circuit
  • Open/short in cruise control switch wiring or connector
  • Loss of vehicle speed input to cruise control/ECM
  • Module internal failure or intermittent CAN communication

Fault status

⚠️ Status
