Causes

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data from all modules (PCM, BCM, IPC/cluster)
  • Check vehicle service/oil life data and recent maintenance interval history
  • Visually inspect instrument cluster connector, wiring harness, and lamp socket for corrosion, damage, or water intrusion
  • Check for aftermarket devices or recent repairs near affected circuits
  • Confirm whether lamp is bulb or LED and inspect/replace lamp element if accessible

Signal parameters

  • With key ON and lamp commanded ON: lamp connector should show battery voltage (~12–14.5 V) at the supply terminal (or close to it, depending on topology)
  • With lamp commanded OFF: control/return terminal should be near 0 V if the module switches ground (or near battery voltage if high-side switched) — verify actual topology from wiring diagram
  • Open-circuit: infinite/very high resistance between lamp connector and module ground/supply
  • Short to battery: near 0–1 Ω between circuit and battery positive; short to ground: near 0–1 Ω to chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code and record freeze frame and related codes. Check for additional instrument cluster or communication codes.
  2. Obtain the wiring diagram and identify lamp supply, control/return, and grounding points and which module drives/monitors the lamp (BCM/IPC/ECM).
  3. Inspect connectors, harness sections, and the instrument cluster for corrosion, damaged wires, or water entry. Repair visible damage.
  4. Backprobe the lamp connector with a known-good lamp removed. Command the lamp ON/OFF with a scan tool and observe voltages at the supply and control/return pins.
  5. Perform continuity and resistance checks from the lamp connector to the driver module(s) and to ground/battery as appropriate. Look for opens or high resistance.
  6. Wiggle test harness while monitoring voltage/signals to reproduce intermittent faults.
  7. If wiring checks OK, bench-test or swap the instrument cluster or identified driver module (if available) to confirm faulty cluster/module.
  8. Repair or replace wiring, connectors, or instrument cluster/driver module as required. After repair, clear codes and verify correct operation and that code does not return.
  9. If module replacement is required, follow manufacturer procedures for configuration/reprogramming and re-run diagnostics.

  • Corroded connector or poor ground at instrument cluster or lamp socket
  • Open circuit in lamp feed or return wiring (broken wire, pin pushed out)
  • Failed lamp driver inside instrument cluster
  • Short to battery or ground caused by damaged harness
