Causes

  • Open, shorted or damaged data communication wire(s) between ECM and traction control/VSA module
  • Loose, corroded or water-damaged connector(s) at ECM, ABS/VSA module or junctions
  • Blown fuse or loss of power/ground to one of the control modules
  • Failed or intermittent traction control (VSA/ABS) control module or ECM/PCM
  • Missing or incorrect bus termination resistor (CAN bus) or bus wiring swapped
  • Software/firmware mismatch or ECU programming error

Symptoms

  • Traction control (VSA/TC/ESC) warning lamp illuminated
  • ABS warning lamp or other stability control lights may also be on
  • Traction control functionality disabled or limited
  • Possible reduced engine power or limp-home mode if ECM receives invalid data
  • Related systems (cruise, ABS, stability) may be disabled or behave erratically

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool (Honda HDS preferred)
  • Check for other communication or U-codes that point to bus-wide issues
  • Verify battery voltage and charging system are within specification
  • Inspect fuses and relays supplying ECM and traction/ABS modules
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at ECM, ABS/VSA module and junction blocks for corrosion, bent pins or water intrusion
  • Perform a wiggle test of wiring while monitoring live data/messages for loss or intermittent return

Signal parameters

  • Communication is over a serial data bus (typically CAN); signals are digital differential
  • Nominal idle voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V; dominant bit shifts CANH higher (~3.5 V) and CANL lower (~1.5 V)
  • Proper bus termination ≈ 120 Ω across CANH–CANL (two 60 Ω terminators in many networks)
  • Typical CAN baud rates used by vehicle networks: 250 kbps or 500 kbps (verify for specific model)
  • Expected behavior: periodic status frames from ECM/VSA module (several hertz); absence indicates no node transmission

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, record DTCs and live data. Note any other communication (U) codes.
  2. Verify battery voltage and charging system; charge or replace battery if low before diagnosing communications.
  3. Check fuses/relays powering ECM and ABS/VSA module; replace any blown fuses and recheck.
  4. Visually inspect wiring and connectors at ECM, ABS/VSA control unit and intermediate junctions for damage or corrosion; repair as needed.
  5. With ignition ON, backprobe the data lines at the ABS/VSA module and ECM. Measure CANH and CANL idle voltages and check differential with a scope if available.
  6. Measure resistance between CANH and CANL with ignition off; confirm ≈ 120 Ω. If open or out of range, trace harness for open or missing terminator.
  7. If intermittent, wiggle harnesses and connectors while watching live data for dropouts; repair wiring harness or replace damaged sections.
  8. Disconnect modules one at a time to isolate the node causing bus interference (if safe and per OEM procedures). If disconnecting clears the bus, suspect the disconnected module.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are confirmed good, consider reflashing or replacing the faulty control module (ABS/VSA or ECM) per manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repair, clear codes, perform a road test and confirm no recurrence of code and normal operation of traction control/ABS systems.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or water intrusion at ABS/VSA or ECM harness
  • Open/shorted data line or harness damage where routed through bulkheads or near moving components
  • Blown fuse or missing power/ground at the traction control or ECM
  • Failed/locked traction control (VSA/ABS) module or ECM
  • CAN bus termination issue (open 120 ohm resistance) or interference on bus

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P1676 — Traction Control System FI Data Line No Signal. The traction control/ECM communication line is not providing expected data. Traction control and related stability functions may be disabled until communication is restored.
