Causes

  • Dirty or sticking throttle body / throttle plate
  • Faulty throttle position sensor (TPS) or throttle actuator
  • Faulty accelerator pedal position sensor (APP)
  • Wiring or connector faults between throttle body and ECU
  • Low or unstable battery/charging voltage
  • Intake air leaks or vacuum leaks downstream of MAF

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light on
  • Rough, unstable, high or low idle
  • Erratic idle speed or throttle response
  • Reduced engine performance or limp-home mode
  • Possible hesitation on acceleration

What to check

  • Read DTCs and freeze frame; note related codes and operating conditions
  • Check battery voltage and charging system under load
  • Inspect throttle body for carbon buildup and proper plate movement
  • Scan live data: throttle angle, target idle, actual idle RPM, APP sensor signals, MAF/MAP readings
  • Inspect wiring and connectors at throttle body, pedal module and ECU for corrosion, damage or poor contact
  • Check for intake manifold / vacuum leaks (visual, smoke test or spray test)

Signal parameters

  • Throttle angle (throttle plate position): typically 0–90° (idle usually 0–10° depending on engine)
  • Idle speed (actual RPM): normally ~650–1000 rpm depending on engine and temperature
  • Target idle (engine control setpoint): matches adaptive target for conditions
  • APP/pedal position: 0–100% (at rest ~0%)
  • Battery voltage: 11.5–14.8 V (engine running)
  • MAF: grams/sec appropriate for engine size and rpm; MAP: kPa/load values within expected range

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTC and related codes; record freeze-frame data and conditions when fault set.
  2. Verify battery voltage and charging system; repair charging/battery issues before further diagnostics.
  3. Visually inspect connectors and wiring to throttle body, pedal sensors and ECU; repair any damage/corrosion.
  4. Inspect and operate throttle body: check for carbon build-up, mechanical binding, and free movement. Clean throttle body if dirty.
  5. Using a scan tool, monitor live data: compare throttle angle, APP, target idle and actual RPM; check for inconsistent or implausible values.
  6. Check MAF/MAP and intake system for leaks or faulty readings (smoke test, vacuum gauge, or spray test).
  7. Perform component tests per manufacturer procedure: TPS/actuator resistance/voltage, pedal sensors, and throttle actuator functional test.
  8. If sensors/actuator pass and mechanical condition is good, perform throttle adaptation/idle learn procedure per MINI service instructions.
  9. If fault persists after cleaning, repairs and adaptation, consider replacing faulty throttle body assembly or relevant sensor(s).
  10. After repairs, clear codes and road test to confirm the fault does not return; re-check for related codes and adaptation status.

Likely causes

  • Contaminated or mechanically sticking throttle body or plate
  • Throttle position sensor or actuator fault
  • Wiring/connectors to throttle body or pedal sensors
  • Intake vacuum leak or MAF/MAP sensor fault
  • Battery/charging system voltage outside specification
