Causes

  • Damaged or corroded connector at the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or wiring harness
  • Open, short to ground or short to battery in the torque reduction request wiring
  • Poor or intermittent ground or power supply to TCM or related module
  • Faulty TCM (internal driver or input circuit failure)
  • Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or communication fault between ECM and TCM
  • Aftermarket electronic devices or recent repairs that disturbed wiring or connectors

Symptoms

  • Transmission fault/warning lamp illuminated (transmission or MIL)
  • Engine torque reduced or ‘limp’ mode engaged with reduced acceleration
  • Harsh, delayed or erratic shifts
  • Transmission stuck in a single gear or limited range
  • Intermittent loss of drive or sudden reduction in engine power during gear changes

What to check

  • Read and record stored/frozen DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool (TCM and ECM)
  • Check for other related codes (engine, CAN bus, battery/charging)
  • Visually inspect TCM and transmission connectors for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or damage
  • Check battery voltage and charging system (low voltage can cause communication faults)
  • Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring live data/scan tool for intermittent changes
  • Inspect harness routing for chafing, heat damage, or rodent chewing

Signal parameters

  • Torque-reduction request is typically a discrete digital request (ON/OFF) between the TCM and engine management — expect a clear OFF voltage (near 0 V) and a clear ON state near battery voltage (approx. 12 V) or a stable pulled-low signal depending on vehicle design
  • Signal should switch cleanly without high-frequency noise or intermittent drops
  • No continuous oscillation; transitions occur when torque reduction is requested during shifting or fault events

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a quality diagnostic tool; record P1712 plus any other stored codes and freeze-frame/live data. Note conditions when the code set.
  2. Verify battery and charging system voltage at rest and during cranking; low supply can cause spurious faults.
  3. Visually inspect TCM and engine harness connectors for corrosion, bent pins, water, or damage. Repair any problems found.
  4. With ignition on, back-probe the torque-reduction request pin and observe the signal with a voltmeter or oscilloscope while commanding torque reduction from the scan tool (if supported) or during a road test. Confirm expected OFF/ON voltages and clean transitions.
  5. If signal missing or intermittent, disconnect connectors and check continuity between TCM pin and ECM/related module pin; check for shorts to battery or ground.
  6. Check TCM power and ground circuits for good continuity and low resistance to battery and chassis ground. Repair poor grounds.
  7. Perform a wiggle test along the wiring harness while monitoring the signal for intermittent changes. Repair any broken wires or poor crimps.
  8. If wiring and connectors are good but the signal is incorrect, consider reflashing/updating TCM software per manufacturer bulletin. Re-check after software update.
  9. If problem persists and wiring, connectors and software are confirmed good, consider replacement or bench testing of the TCM. Follow OEM procedures for module programming and immobilizer/security pairing if replacement is done.
  10. Clear codes and perform road test under the same conditions to confirm repair. Re-scan for returned faults.

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector or pin at TCM or engine control connector
  • Broken or chafed wiring in the torque reduction request circuit
  • Poor ground at TCM or vehicle chassis ground near transmission
  • TCM internal failure or damaged input driver
