Causes

  • Faulty wheel speed sensor (ABS/traction)
  • Faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS) or transmission output speed sensor
  • Damaged wiring harness, chafed cable, corroded connector or poor ground to speed sensor circuit
  • Faulty ABS, transmission or engine control module (ECM/TCM) input
  • Intermittent CAN bus or communication fault between modules
  • Debris or damaged tone ring/reluctor on wheel/hub/shaft

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) and/or ABS/traction/stability warning lamp illuminated
  • Vehicle speed appears non‑zero on dash while stationary or speed display fluctuates at stop
  • Loss or degradation of ABS, traction control or cruise control functionality
  • Transmission shift logic abnormal or limp-home behavior in some models

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a capable scanner; note vehicle speed, individual wheel speeds and which module set the code
  • Scan for additional ABS, transmission or CAN bus codes and note relationships
  • Visually inspect wheel speed sensor connectors, harness routing and grounds near affected wheel(s) and transmission
  • Inspect tone ring/reluctor on wheel hub, axle or transmission output for missing/damaged teeth or heavy contamination
  • Confirm vehicle is actually stationary and compare all four wheel speed sensor readings and VSS on scan tool

Signal parameters

  • At rest: wheel speed sensor pulse frequency = 0 Hz (no pulses) and vehicle speed PID = 0 km/h or mph
  • While rolling: wheel speed sensors produce regular pulse/frequency or differential voltages; amplitudes depend on sensor type (Hall, VR)
  • Sensor reference supply typically present (check 5 V or specific reference and ground)
  • CAN/serial speed messages present and consistent between ABS, ECM and TCM modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool that can display live data from ABS, ECM/TCM. Confirm P1722 is active or historic and capture freeze frame. Compare vehicle speed and individual wheel speeds while stationary and during a short drive.
  2. Visually inspect wiring and connectors for the wheel speed sensors and VSS (bends, chafing, corrosion, water ingress). Repair or reseal connectors if compromised.
  3. With ignition on, backprob the sensor connector: verify reference voltage, ground continuity and that the sensor output changes when wheel is rotated (or use a drive/roller).
  4. If VR (variable reluctance) sensor, measure AC voltage while wheel rotates. If Hall sensor, probe for a square wave signal. Use an oscilloscope for best results where available.
  5. Inspect tone/reluctor ring for damage, missing teeth, rust build-up or debris; clean or replace if damaged.
  6. Check CAN bus and module communications for errors. Repair any wiring, terminators or grounding issues found.
  7. If wiring and sensors pass tests, consider swapping suspected wheel sensor with another corner (if identical) to see if code follows sensor. Replace failed sensor or repair harness as required.
  8. After repairs, clear the code, perform a test drive and re-scan to confirm the code does not return. If code persists, update module software and consider module bench testing or replacement per manufacturer procedure.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or disconnected wheel speed sensor connector
  • Damaged wheel speed tone ring (missing teeth)
  • Open or short in speed sensor wiring harness

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Control module detected an unexpected or inconsistent vehicle speed signal when vehicle should be stopped. Code stored and warning lamps (MIL/ABS/traction) may be illuminated. Further investigation of wheel speed sensors, VSS, wiring and module communications is required.
