Causes

  • Burnt out indicator bulb or failed LED module
  • Blown fuse or poor ground at instrument cluster
  • Damaged wiring or poor connector connection between transmission/shift position sensor and cluster/BCM
  • Faulty transmission range sensor (PRNDL) or selector switch
  • Faulty instrument cluster or lamp driver circuit
  • CAN bus or module communication fault (BCM/TCM/ECM)

Symptoms

  • 'D' position lamp does not illuminate when selector is in Drive
  • Lamp stays illuminated in other gears or does not change with gear selection
  • Incorrect or missing gear position display on cluster
  • Possible related transmission fault indications or limp-home behavior if PRNDL signal is out of range
  • Intermittent operation of shift position lamps

What to check

  • Visual inspection of D indicator lamp (bulb/LED) for damage or discoloration
  • Check relevant fuses and main grounds for instrument cluster
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors between shifter/PRNDL sensor, instrument cluster and BCM/TCM for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Scan vehicle with a diagnostic tool for current/ stored DTCs and live data of gear position/PRNDL status
  • Verify instrument cluster receives power and ground (battery voltage at cluster connector)
  • Check for CAN/communication-related codes and verify network communication to BCM/TCM/cluster

Signal parameters

  • Indicator lamp supply: nominal battery voltage (~12 V) when powered; 0 V when switched off (values may vary during cranking)
  • Lamp current: incandescent bulbs typically tens of mA to 1 A range; LEDs draw low mA (verify by measuring current when lamp should be on)
  • Control signal: lamp may be switched to ground or 12 V by cluster driver — expect a change between ~0 V and battery voltage when toggling gear position
  • PRNDL/selector output: digital or analog signal—expect clear change in state/value when shifting between positions (check live data)
  • CAN bus: proper CAN High/Low idle voltages ~2.5 V (differential behavior) and activity when commands are changed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Gather vehicle info and confirm symptom: note when lamp is incorrect and any other related faults.
  2. Check fuses and inspect instrument cluster area for obvious damage. Replace fuse if blown and re-test.
  3. Visually inspect D indicator lamp (bulb or LED) and remove cluster trim to access lamp. Replace bulb/LED if visibly failed and re-test.
  4. With a scan tool, read live data for transmission range/PRNDL input and verify the gear position reported by the control modules matches physical shifter position.
  5. Backprobe lamp connector at cluster and observe voltage while changing shifter into D. Verify the cluster is commanding the lamp (voltage toggles) — if cluster commands lamp but lamp does not light, suspect lamp or wiring between cluster and lamp.
  6. If cluster does not command the lamp, trace wiring to cluster for power/ground and continuity to lamp. Repair damaged wiring or connectors.
  7. If PRNDL data is incorrect or absent, test the transmission range sensor/switch at the shifter (measure reference voltage, signal output and ground). Repair or replace selector/PRNDL as needed.
  8. If wiring and PRNDL are good but lamp still behaves incorrectly, suspect instrument cluster lamp driver fault or module communication failure. Check for CAN communication errors and module responses. Repair/replace cluster or module per manufacturer procedures.
  9. Clear codes and retest road/test to confirm repair; monitor for return of fault codes.

Likely causes

  • Failed indicator lamp (bulb or LED)
  • Poor connector or wiring to instrument cluster
  • Faulty instrument cluster lamp driver
  • Faulty transmission range/selector switch or PRNDL signal
