TCM Power Control Relay Circuit Open

Causes

  • Blown fuse supplying TCM relay coil or relay feed
  • Faulty TCM power control relay
  • Open or high-resistance wiring/connector between relay, battery, ignition feed and TCM
  • Poor or corroded ground at TCM or relay ground circuit
  • Faulty ignition switch or fuse box internal connection
  • Failed TCM internal relay driver or internal TCM power fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission will not shift or engages only in limp/second gear
  • MIL/Transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • No communication or intermittent communication with TCM on scan tool
  • Engine cranks but vehicle will not move or drive gears absent
  • Erratic shifting or unexpected gear behavior
  • Stored DTCs related to transmission or vehicle speed may accompany P1800

What to check

  • Scan for stored codes and freeze-frame data; note related transmission codes
  • Visually inspect TCM relay, fuse(s), relay socket and wiring for corrosion, heat damage or loose pins
  • Check battery voltage at fuse/relay with key ON and engine OFF
  • Verify power and ground at TCM connector with a DVOM
  • Backprobe relay coil and contacts to confirm control and switched power
  • Verify no aftermarket devices are interfering with relay circuit

Signal parameters

  • Battery feed to relay contact: approx. battery voltage (12–14.5 V) with key ON
  • Ignition-switched feed to relay coil: battery voltage with key ON (or control voltage as specified by vehicle wiring)
  • Relay coil resistance: typically tens to a few hundred ohms (manufacturer-specific); open indicates coil failure
  • Ground at TCM/relay ground terminal: near 0 Ω to chassis ground
  • When relay energized: continuity between relay common and normally open contact (near 0 Ω); when de-energized: open circuit

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze-frame and all stored codes. Note any related P-codes (transmission, speed sensors, communication).
  2. Inspect fuse(s) for the TCM/PCM/relay power circuits; replace any blown fuse and retest. Check fuse holder for corrosion.
  3. Locate the TCM power control relay (relay box/fuse panel). Swap with identical known-good relay if available and see if fault clears or symptoms change.
  4. With key OFF, inspect relay socket and wiring for damage, corrosion or bent pins. Repair any damaged connectors.
  5. With key ON (engine OFF) backprobe the relay coil terminals: verify switching/control voltage on the coil and continuity to fuse/ignition source. If no coil voltage, trace ignition feed and control circuit back to switch/ECM/TCM driver.
  6. With key ON, measure voltage at the relay switched contact and at the TCM power pin(s). If relay contact has battery voltage but TCM has no power, check wiring between relay and TCM for open/high resistance.
  7. Check ground(s) for the TCM: measure resistance to chassis ground; clean/tighten grounds as needed.
  8. If wiring and grounds check OK and relay verified good, suspect internal TCM power driver failure. Verify with manufacturer service information; consider bench/controlled tests or TCM replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform a key cycle and road test to confirm normal transmission operation and that P1800 does not return.
  10. If intermittent, perform wiggle tests on harnesses and road test with a scan tool connected to capture intermittent loss.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or missing fuse in relay power circuit
  • Faulty or stuck power control relay (contacts open)
  • Disconnected or corroded relay socket/connector
  • Open feed wire from ignition/fusebox to relay coil or from battery to relay contacts
  • Open/poor ground at TCM
  • Internal TCM power supply/driver failure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TCM Power Control Relay Circuit Open — the transmission control module is not receiving expected power via its control relay. Check fuse, relay, wiring and TCM power/ground.
