Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit

Causes

  • Open or short circuit in fuel level sensor B wiring
  • Corroded or loose connector at the fuel tank module or ECM
  • Faulty fuel level sender (tank module) — sensor B element
  • Poor tank or module grounding or power supply issue
  • Water or fuel intrusion causing intermittent connections
  • Pinched/chafed wiring from body/tank movement or aftermarket work

Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge reading erratic, stuck, or indicating empty/full incorrectly
  • MIL/Check Engine Light illuminated and code P2065 stored
  • Inconsistent fuel level displayed in instrument cluster or vehicle telemetry
  • Possible no communication or implausible values in scan tool live data for fuel level B

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and readiness data with a diagnostic scanner; record fuel level and live data for sensor B
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the fuel tank module, junctions and ECM for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Check for water/fuel contamination in the sender connector and inside tank-access area
  • Wiggle harness/connectors while watching live data to reproduce intermittent faults
  • Consult manufacturer wiring diagram to identify supply, ground and signal pins for sensor B

Signal parameters

  • Reference/supply voltage: typically a regulated 5 V reference from the module (verify with service data)
  • Signal voltage: varies with tank level (commonly ~0.5–4.5 V across empty→full); reading out of range flags a fault
  • Sender resistance: variable resistance type — resistance changes as float moves (consult vehicle-specific service data for exact ohm range)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Follow manufacturer safety procedures; relieve fuel system pressure and isolate electrical power if accessing tank module wiring
  2. Connect a diagnostic scanner and confirm P2065 is current or historic; view live data for Fuel Level Sensor B while operating float (if accessible)
  3. Perform visual inspection of the sender connector, harness, and chassis/tank ground. Repair any obvious damage or corrosion
  4. Backprobing: with ignition ON (engine off), check for reference voltage at the sender connector reference pin and good ground continuity to chassis ground
  5. Measure signal voltage at connector while changing fuel level or moving float (careful when accessing inside tank). Signal should move smoothly without dropout — if fixed or out-of-range, suspect sender or wiring
  6. If no reference or ground, trace and repair supply/ground wiring back to fuse/ECM; check fuses/relays protecting the circuit
  7. Perform resistance/continuity check between sender signal pin and ECM input to find opens/shorts. Repair wiring faults and re-test
  8. If wiring and connector are good but signal/sender resistance remains incorrect, remove and bench-test or replace the fuel tank module/sender (follow safe fuel-handling procedures and manufacturer instructions)
  9. If sender and wiring test good, inspect ECM/PCM input and related grounds; substitute or reprogram ECM only after all other causes eliminated and per manufacturer guidance
  10. Clear codes and road-test; confirm code does not return and that live data and instrument cluster readings are normal

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at tank module or inline connector
  • Open or shorted wiring to sensor B (rubbed through, chafed, or disconnected)
  • Failed fuel level sender element in the tank module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Diagnostic Trouble Code P2065 — Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit. The control module detected an invalid or out-of-range signal from the secondary fuel level sender circuit. May set MIL and store freeze frame/live data; further diagnosis required to locate wiring, connector, or sender fault.
