Causes

  • Faulty fuel level sender/module (tank B)
  • Open or short in sender wiring harness
  • Poor or corroded connector or pin contact at sender or ECU
  • Bad ground or supply voltage to the sender
  • Water/moisture ingress or contamination in tank or connector
  • Instrument cluster or module (ECM/BCM) input fault

Symptoms

  • Incorrect or erratic fuel gauge reading for tank B
  • Range/remaining distance inaccurate or not updating
  • Instrument cluster warning or message about fuel sensor
  • Possible MIL illuminated (depending on model and configuration)
  • Dashboard fuel level may read full, empty, jump, or freeze

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a diagnostic scanner; confirm P2066 and check fuel level B PID behavior
  • Compare fuel level B readings to fuel level A (if dual-tank) and actual known fuel amount
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring to the tank for corrosion, damage, or water ingress
  • Check supply voltage and ground at the sender connector with key ON
  • Measure sender output signal (voltage or resistance) while moving the sender float or changing fuel level if accessible
  • Perform wiggle tests on harness while watching live data for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • Sender output should change smoothly and monotonically as fuel level changes (no abrupt jumps)
  • Typical sender voltage range (key on) commonly about 0.5–4.5 V depending on design; verify OEM spec for exact values
  • Resistance-based senders will show a predictable resistance range across travel — consult Land Rover specification (often tens to a few hundred ohms)
  • Supply voltage to sender should be stable (battery voltage) and ground resistance should be low

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the active DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool. Note conditions when code set.
  2. Reproduce problem: monitor Fuel Level Sensor B live data while changing vehicle attitude or adding a known fuel amount (if safe). Compare to Sensor A if present.
  3. Inspect and secure connectors at the tank module and control module. Look for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion or damaged seals.
  4. With key ON (engine off) backprobing the sender connector, measure supply, ground, and signal. Confirm supply voltage and good ground before testing signal.
  5. Measure signal voltage or sensor resistance while moving the float (if sender accessable) or while an assistant shifts fuel level: signal should move smoothly through the expected range.
  6. Perform continuity checks from the sender connector to the control module to detect opens or shorts; repair any wiring faults.
  7. If wiring and connector are good but signal still out of range or non-linear, replace the fuel level sender/module (tank B).
  8. After repair, clear codes and confirm correct operation over drive cycle and that code does not return.
  9. If fault persists after sender replacement, consider module input diagnostics or control module reprogramming/repair per dealer procedure.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at fuel tank sender (high probability)
  • Damaged wiring or broken conductor between sender B and control module
  • Failed sender unit (float, resistor track) inside tank module
  • Poor ground connection at tank or chassis
  • PCM/BCM input fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fuel Level Sensor B circuit out of expected range or performance. Sensor signal is missing, out of range, erratic, or not changing with fuel level.
