Causes

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and freeze data from the scan tool
  • Visually inspect harness, connectors, and injector rail for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check EFI/fuel/engine fuse(s) and related fusible links/relay for continuity and correct operation
  • Back-probe injector group A supply connector with key ON to measure supply voltage
  • Wiggle harness/connectors while monitoring codes/voltage to reproduce intermittent faults
  • Check battery voltage and engine ground integrity

Signal parameters

  • Expected injector supply voltage (Key ON, engine OFF): ~battery voltage (≈11–14 V) at the injector supply/rail
  • Injector driver output: pulsed return (ground) from PCM during cranking/running — pulses 0 V to near-battery depending on driver type
  • Typical injector coil resistance: dependent on application; many common injectors ≈1–16 Ω (consult vehicle spec)
  • No pulse/open condition: infinite resistance or no change when actuating injector group via scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool; read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data for context
  2. Visually inspect the injector group A wiring harness, rail connectors, and PCM connector for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  3. Check and verify related fuses and relays (EFI/injector power relay, main fuses) for continuity; replace or repair if blown
  4. With key ON (engine OFF), back-probe the injector group A supply pin at the rail and verify battery voltage present. If no voltage, trace back to fuse/relay and battery
  5. If supply voltage present, command the injector group A ON with a scan tool while measuring voltage/current at the rail/individual injectors to verify switching/pulsing
  6. If no pulsing, check continuity from injector driver pins at PCM to the injector group connector. Repair any open circuits or high-resistance connections
  7. Perform wiggle testing on harness/connectors while monitoring signal to look for intermittent opens
  8. If wiring and supply check good, isolate and bench-test individual injectors for short/open; measure coil resistance against spec
  9. If wiring and injectors OK, suspect PCM driver fault. Confirm with manufacturer-recommended PCM tests and replace/reprogram PCM only after verifying harness and components
  10. After repair, clear codes, retest under various operating conditions and confirm code does not return

Likely causes

  • Blown or corroded fuse for injector rail or fuel module
  • Disconnected or corroded connector at the injector rail
  • Broken wire or pinbacked terminal in harness to injector group A
  • Open circuit between injector rail and PCM supply/relay
  • Defective PCM injector driver output (less common)
