Causes

  • Short or stuck output in the engine/control module
  • Relay or pump control driver stuck closed
  • Faulty pump motor with internal short or mechanical jam forcing motor on
  • Wiring short to battery or ground at the pump control circuit
  • Corroded/shorted connector or terminal at pump B
  • Faulty body/control module commanding the pump erroneously

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or SCR/DEF warning illuminated
  • Reductant pump B runs continuously even when system commands it off
  • Rapid depletion of reductant (DEF/AdBlue) fluid
  • Possible inability to perform proper dosing/regeneration; reduced emission control performance
  • Stored DTC P215D and possibly related DEF system codes
  • Unusual pump noise or excessive heat at pump or wiring harness

What to check

  • Read and record stored codes, freeze frame and pending codes with scan tool
  • Check vehicle manufacturer service information and TSBs for known issues
  • Perform visual inspection of pump B, wiring, connectors, ground points and fuse/relay(s) for corrosion, damage or aftermarket splices
  • With ignition ON (engine off), observe pump behavior and listen for continuous operation
  • Using a scan tool, command pump B OFF and monitor pump state and control output
  • Check related fuses and relays for proper operation; swap relay with known good if applicable

Signal parameters

  • Connector voltage when pump commanded OFF: ~0 V (should not be battery voltage)
  • Connector voltage when pump commanded ON: ~Battery voltage (11–14.5 V) or PWM-modulated voltage per manufacturer spec
  • Control signal type: switched battery or PWM from ECM/module (check vehicle data)
  • When commanded OFF, current draw should be near zero; typical OFF current
  • When commanded ON, expected current draw depends on pump (commonly 1–5 A) — compare to spec
  • Resistance of pump motor coil (ohms) per service manual

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool; read and record all codes, freeze frame, and live data for reductant pump B. Note ignition and engine status during freeze frame.
  2. Review manufacturer service information and TSBs for P215D or pump B issues.
  3. Visually inspect pump B, harness, connectors, grounds, fuses and relays for damage, corrosion or aftermarket modifications. Repair any obvious faults.
  4. With ignition ON (engine OFF), command pump B OFF via scan tool. Listen/observe: if pump continues to run, proceed to electrical checks.
  5. Check pump relay (if fitted): identify relay and swap with identical known-good relay or bench test. If relay is welded/closed replace relay and re-test.
  6. Backprobe pump connector: measure voltage with pump commanded OFF. If battery voltage present, trace wiring for short to battery or stuck relay/driver. Repair wiring as required.

Likely causes

  • Wiring short to battery on pump B control circuit
  • Stuck closed relay or defective pump driver in control module
  • Failed pump motor with low internal resistance causing current draw when off
  • Corroded/shorted connector at pump assembly
  • Faulty ECM/powertrain control module output (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Control module detected pump B electrical supply or driver output active when commanded off. Code set when continuous pump-on condition persists or defined threshold of current/voltage is exceeded.
