Causes

  • Perform wiggle test on wiring harness while monitoring signal for intermittent changes
  • Check fuel quality for contamination (water, phase-separated ethanol in petrol)

Signal parameters

  • Sensor circuits typically use a 0–5.0 V signal; consult vehicle-specific manual for exact values
  • Typical failure thresholds: open/high voltage > ~4.5 V, short/low < ~0.5 V (manufacturer dependent)
  • Signal may be resistive change when water present — resistance or voltage will move beyond normal range
  • Reference (5 V) and ground should be stable at key-on and running — check for 5 V reference at sensor connector

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code and freeze-frame data with an advanced scan tool; record PID for water-in-fuel sensor
  2. Visually inspect fuel filter/water separator and drain any water; replace filter if contaminated
  3. Inspect connector and wiring: unplug sensor, check for corrosion, bent pins, water, and secure fit
  4. With connector unplugged, check for 5 V reference and ground at sensor connector (key ON, engine OFF). If missing, trace back to PCM and fuses
  5. Measure sensor signal with connector connected: note voltage key ON and during cranking/running; compare to expected range in factory data
  6. Perform resistance check of sensor if specified by manufacturer (some sensors change resistance when wet) — compare to service manual values
  7. Back-probe connector and wiggle harness to reproduce fault or intermittent behavior while monitoring live data
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good and signal is out-of-spec, replace the water-in-fuel sensor and re-test
  9. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform forced readiness or drive cycle and verify code does not return
