Turbocharger Compressor Outlet Valve Control Circuit Low

Causes

  • Short to ground on the actuator/solenoid control wire
  • Open or high-resistance wiring or connector (poor pin contact, corrosion)
  • Failed compressor outlet valve actuator / solenoid / motor
  • Blown fuse or loss of supply voltage to the valve circuit
  • ECU/PCM driver output failure
  • Mechanical seizure or binding of the compressor outlet valve preventing expected response

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Low boost or inconsistent boost pressure
  • Hesitation or poor acceleration
  • Unusual turbo noises (flutter, stuck bypass sounds)
  • Possible increased smoke or fuel consumption

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a capable scan tool; note commanded vs actual valve state and boost readings
  • Visually inspect wiring and connector at the compressor outlet valve for damage, corrosion, heat exposure and secure fit
  • Check fuses and power supply circuits related to turbo control
  • Backprobe connector and measure voltage at the valve with key ON and while commanding valve ON/OFF from scan tool
  • Measure resistance of the actuator/solenoid (compare to specification in service information)
  • Check for continuity between the valve control pin and the PCM; check for short to ground or to battery

Signal parameters

  • Control signal type depends on vehicle: PWM (variable duty) or switched ground; consult service manual
  • Expected supply/reference: typically battery voltage (approx. 12 V) present at valve supply pin with key ON (vehicle-specific)
  • Control/return pin expected voltage: varies with command — often 0 V (ground) when driver pulls low or PWM from 0–12 V or 0–5 V (refer to manual)
  • Low-circuit definition: measured voltage significantly below expected when the ECU commands the valve or measured continuity to ground when not expected
  • Typical actuator coil resistance: vehicle-specific — measure and compare to service spec

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all related DTCs, freeze frame data and live PID values (boost, valve position/command).
  2. Visually inspect harness and connector at turbocharger for heat damage, chafing, corrosion or moisture; repair damaged wiring/connectors as needed.
  3. With connector disconnected, measure actuator coil resistance; compare to the specification in the factory service manual. Very high or infinite resistance indicates open circuit; very low resistance indicates shorted coil.
  4. Backprobe the connector at the valve with the ignition ON and with the engine running while commanding the valve from the scan tool. Verify supply voltage and control signal behavior (voltage or PWM).
  5. Check for continuity between the valve control pin and the ECU pin; check for unintended continuity to ground or battery (shorts).
  6. If the wiring and actuator check OK, command the valve and observe actuator movement (visual or audible). If actuator does not respond but wiring is good, replace the actuator.
  7. If wiring shows a short to ground or the ECU pin is not switching correctly, consult wiring diagrams and isolate the short; if ECU driver is suspected, confirm with oscilloscope or substitute ECU only if supported by manufacturer procedures.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform a functional test and a road test while monitoring boost and valve behavior to confirm the fault is resolved.
  9. If intermittent, perform extended driving cycles and re-check for error reappearance; inspect for heat-related wiring degradation near the turbocharger.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/frayed wiring near turbocharger (chafing, heat damage)
  • Corroded or pushed-out terminal at connector
  • Failed valve actuator (internally shorted or open)
  • Ground short on control circuit
  • Faulty ECU output stage

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Turbocharger compressor outlet valve control circuit low — control circuit voltage below expected range (possible short to ground, open/high resistance, actuator or ECU driver fault).
