Causes

  • Carbon-clogged EGR valve or passages/EGR cooler
  • Sticking or failed EGR valve (mechanical or stepper motor)
  • Faulty EGR position sensor or temperature/pressure sensors related to EGR
  • Vacuum supply leak, failed vacuum solenoid or solenoid valve (vacuum‑operated systems)
  • Wiring faults, poor connector, or intermittent electrical connection to EGR components
  • Intake manifold leaks or boost control issues (turbocharged engines) affecting EGR flow

Symptoms

  • Check Engine MIL illuminated (P2413 stored)
  • Reduced engine power, hesitation or poor drivability
  • Rough idle or stalling
  • Increased NOx emissions / possible failed emissions test
  • Sooty exhaust or unusual odor
  • Possible coolant loss or overheating if EGR cooler is leaking internally

What to check

  • Read freeze‑frame and live data with a dealer‑grade scan tool; compare commanded vs actual EGR position/flow
  • Check for additional related codes (EGR sensor, temp, pressure, vacuum solenoids)
  • Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors at EGR valve, sensors, and solenoid
  • Check vacuum supply and operation of vacuum solenoids (if applicable)
  • Inspect EGR valve and passages for carbon build‑up; inspect EGR cooler and lines for restriction or leaks
  • Perform smoke or pressure test to check for intake manifold leaks that affect EGR flow

Signal parameters

  • EGR position sensor voltage typically varies across range (commonly ~0.1–4.9 V depending on travel) — actual expected span should be confirmed from vehicle data
  • Commanded vs actual EGR position (percent or steps) — should follow commanded changes smoothly
  • EGR solenoid duty cycle or activation signal (0–100% PWM) when commanded ON/OFF
  • Differential pressure or mass flow readings across EGR cooler (where equipped) — look for values outside normal band
  • EGR temperature delta (upstream vs downstream) if temp sensors are used to infer flow

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame, full DTC list and vehicle-specific data. Verify P2413 is active and note conditions (rpm, load, temperature).
  2. Inspect connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or poor pin fit at EGR valve, position sensor, solenoid and related sensors.
  3. With scan tool, command EGR open/close and observe actual position or feedback. Note discrepancies or lack of movement.
  4. Test vacuum supply or solenoid operation (if vacuum actuated) and verify vacuum reaches the valve during commands.
  5. Check electrical continuity and reference voltage to EGR position sensor; measure sensor output while moving valve (manually or commanded).
  6. If valve does not move or feedback is incorrect, remove and visually inspect EGR valve and passages for carbon. Clean if moderate buildup; if seized or heavily damaged replace.
  7. Inspect/replace clogged EGR cooler or clean passages; if coolant contamination or internal cooler leak is found, repair/replace and address coolant loss.
  8. After repair or component replacement, clear codes and perform a monitored road test to ensure commanded vs actual EGR behavior and confirm code does not return.
  9. If electrical faults persist despite good components, consider PCM/ECM reflash or replacement as a last resort following manufacturer procedures.

Likely causes

  • Carbon buildup restricting EGR valve or cooler
  • EGR valve not moving (stuck or failed actuator)
  • Faulty EGR position sensor or its circuit
  • Vacuum/solenoid failure preventing valve movement
  • Wiring/connectors intermittent or open causing incorrect feedback

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P2413 — Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system performance fault detected. The EGR flow or position is outside expected range; inspection of EGR valve, controls, sensors and passages is required.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.5 hours
