Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring to the secondary air flow/sensor for bank 1
  • Corroded, damaged or disconnected sensor connector
  • Failed secondary air flow sensor or flow meter
  • Faulty secondary air injection pump, relay or fuse (no supply to sensor or pump)
  • Blocked/failed SAI plumbing or check valve causing abnormal sensor reading
  • Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or poor ECM ground (less common)

Symptoms

  • MIL/Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Possible failed emissions test
  • Reduced or disabled secondary air injection function on cold start
  • Possible rough cold idle or increased emissions during cold start
  • Stored or pending related SAI codes (may see pump/valve related codes)

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and all stored codes; check pending codes for related SAI faults
  • Perform visual inspection of sensor connector and harness for corrosion, water ingress, chafing or damage
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for SAI pump and sensor power/ECU supply
  • With ignition ON, check for 5 V reference and good ground at the sensor connector
  • Command the SAI pump/valve (if supported) and verify pump operation and 12 V supply to pump
  • Inspect SAI plumbing, check valve and hoses for blockage, collapsed hose or leaks

Signal parameters

  • Sensor supply/reference: ~5 V reference (verify with service data)
  • Signal voltage range: 0–5 V (low/near 0 V = circuit bottom/short to ground)
  • Expected idle/flow signal: variable depending on flow; should not be a constant 0.0 V when system is commanded
  • Pump supply: ~12 V when ECM commands the air pump (check with DVOM)
  • Connector/ECM pin continuity: near 0 ohms between sensor ground and chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and all related/previous codes; note conditions when code set (engine temp, RPM, etc.).
  2. Visual inspection: check sensor connector, wiring harness, for corrosion, damage, water entry or pin push-out. Repair any visible damage.
  3. Check fuses/relays for the SAI pump and any ECM reference circuits; replace if blown or faulty.
  4. With ignition ON (engine OFF) backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (~5 V), signal voltage (should not be stuck at 0 V unless system is off), and ground continuity to chassis. Record readings.
  5. Command SAI pump/valve using scan tool (if capable). Verify pump receives 12 V and runs. If pump does not run but receives voltage, suspect pump fault; if no voltage, trace relay/fuse/ECM output.
  6. If reference or signal missing, check continuity from sensor pins to ECM pins for opens/shorts. Repair wiring as required. Check for short to ground on signal wire.
  7. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal remains low, replace the secondary air flow sensor/flow meter and retest.
  8. After repairs clear codes and perform a verification drive/operation cycle to confirm the fault does not return. If it does, consider ECU/ground integrity or professional diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Damaged sensor connector or pin(s) shorted to ground
  • Broken wire between sensor and ECM causing low/0V signal
  • Failed secondary air flow sensor itself
  • Missing 5 V reference or ground from ECM due to blown fuse or relay
  • SAI pump not running so flow = 0 and sensor reports low (or the plumbing is blocked)
