Causes

  • Failed or out-of-spec AIR system pressure/flow sensor (Bank 2)
  • Wiring problems: open, short to battery or ground, high resistance, or corroded connector
  • Poor sensor reference or ground (5 V reference missing or weak ground)
  • Secondary air injection pump or valve failure preventing correct pressure/flow
  • Blocked or collapsed AIR hoses, check valves or passages (restrictions)
  • Exhaust or intake leaks affecting sensor readings

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (CEL/MIL) illuminated
  • Possible failed emissions test (increased cold-start emissions)
  • Reduced or disabled secondary air injection function during cold start
  • Fault codes related to secondary air system or oxygen sensors
  • Generally no major drivability symptoms unless multiple components fail (may cause rough cold idle)

What to check

  • Retrieve and record freeze frame and live data for AIR pressure/flow sensor (Bank 2) with a scan tool
  • Check for related codes (other AIR system or oxygen sensor codes)
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector, wiring harness and routing for damage, corrosion or pin backout
  • Verify sensor supply: check 5 V reference (or specified reference), ground, and signal at the connector
  • Backprobe signal while commanding AIR pump/valve on and off; watch for expected signal change
  • Inspect AIR pump, check valves, and hoses for blockages, collapsed hoses or leaks

Signal parameters

  • Sensor typically uses a 5 V reference and ground with a 0–5 V signal output (manufacturer-specific scale)
  • Expected idle/steady values vary by vehicle; signal should change when AIR pump is commanded on (noticeable voltage or pressure change)
  • Look for steady, valid voltage (no rapid noise) and sensor reaction when pump/valve state changes
  • Typical pressure ranges are low (kPa or mbar scale) — verify exact manufacturer spec before replacement

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool, note freeze frame, and view live AIR pressure/flow sensor data bank 2. Confirm the code is current and repeatable.
  2. Visually inspect sensor, connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. With ignition on, verify reference voltage (typically 5 V) and good ground at the sensor connector. If no reference or ground, trace wiring to ECM.
  4. Backprobe the sensor signal and observe nominal voltage. Command the AIR pump/valve on with the scan tool; confirm the sensor signal changes as pressure/flow changes. If signal does not change, suspect sensor, pump, valve or blockage.
  5. Check continuity and resistance of the signal and reference wires between sensor and ECM; repair any opens/shorts. Wiggle harness during operation to find intermittent faults.
  6. Inspect and test the AIR pump and check valves: verify the pump runs when commanded and produces airflow/pressure; inspect hoses for restrictions or collapsed sections.
  7. If wiring and pump/valves are good but signal is incorrect, substitute a known-good sensor or bench-test sensor per manufacturer procedure.
  8. Clear codes and perform a drive cycle to confirm repair. If code returns, consider ECM input fault and follow OEM procedures for module testing/replacement.

Likely causes

  • Damaged sensor or contaminated sensing port
  • Connector corrosion or pin damage at sensor harness
  • Broken/shorted wiring between sensor and ECM (Bank 2)
  • Stuck/failed AIR pump check valve or collapsed hose causing unusual pressure
  • Failed secondary air injection pump not producing expected pressure

Fault status

⚠️ Status
MIL ON — DTC P2436 stored. The AIR system pressure/flow sensor circuit for bank 2 is reporting out-of-range or improper performance. Secondary air injection may be reduced or disabled, increasing emissions.
