Causes

  • Faulty EVAP switching/vent/purge solenoid or valve (stuck open, stuck closed, or intermittent)
  • Damaged or clogged charcoal canister or internal blockage in EVAP plumbing
  • Restricted, collapsed, disconnected, or damaged EVAP hoses or fittings
  • Wiring fault: open, short to ground/voltage, corroded connector, or poor pin contact at valve
  • PCM/BCM software or internal fault (less common)
  • Mechanical obstruction or foreign object trapping the valve

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Failed emissions test or readiness monitors not setting
  • Possible fuel odor near fuel tank or EVAP components
  • Usually no obvious drivability problems, but some models may show rough idle or hesitation if purge stuck open

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and DTC history with a capable scan tool
  • Check EVAP system readiness and live data for valve command vs. actual state
  • Visually inspect EVAP hoses, connectors, and charcoal canister for damage, kinks, or restrictions
  • Measure resistance of the switching/vent solenoid and compare to specification
  • Backprobe valve connector to verify control voltage, ground, and switching when commanded
  • Perform a smoke/leak test to identify trapped or blocked sections of the EVAP system

Signal parameters

  • Control signal: PCM ground-switching or voltage pulse (check model-specific wiring diagram)
  • Expected control voltage when commanded: 0V (ground) or battery voltage when opened/closed — verify with model data
  • Typical solenoid coil resistance: check vehicle spec (commonly tens to a few hundred ohms depending on valve type)
  • Command duty cycle or ON/OFF state reported by scanner during active tests
  • Response time: valve should change state promptly when commanded; delayed or no response indicates mechanical or electrical fault
  • EVAP system pressure/vacuum behavior when commanded (smoke test or pressure test results)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC and note freeze frame data. Clear code and perform one drive cycle to confirm repeatability.
  2. Use a scan tool to command the EVAP switching/vent valve and observe live data: does the valve state change and does the scanner show a status change?
  3. Visually inspect valve, wiring harness, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water ingress. Repair any obvious faults.
  4. With ignition off, disconnect valve and measure coil resistance. Compare to factory specification. If open/shorted, replace valve.
  5. Backprobe the connector with ignition on and command the valve while monitoring voltage/current to confirm PCM is commanding and that power/ground are present.
  6. Perform a smoke test or apply low pressure/vacuum to EVAP lines to locate blockages, restrictions, or trapped sections. Repair or replace damaged hoses or canister as needed.
  7. If electrical supply and valve operation are normal but flow is incorrect, inspect/replace charcoal canister and related plumbing (check for internal collapse or saturation).
  8. If wiring and components test good, check PCM outputs and grounds; consult wiring diagrams and consider module reflash or replacement if manufacturer guidance indicates.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and verify proper operation through a full drive cycle and readiness monitor set.

Likely causes

  • Failed EVAP switching/vent solenoid
  • Blocked or collapsed EVAP hose or port causing trapped condition
  • Connector corrosion or wiring break at the valve
  • Charcoal canister saturated or internally damaged

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Evaporative emission switching valve performance fault — valve open/trapped. Inspect EVAP valve, hoses, canister, wiring, and PCM commands.
